As most of you know, there has been 9 suicides @ Foxconn in 2010 (Jan-Present)
However after checking WHO (World Health Organization) archives, I found that the suicide rate in China is about 14 / 100,000 people / year.
Considering Foxconn has 400,000 employees in ShenZhen, the norm would be 4*14 = 56 suicides / year. Since it is only near the end of may, the average would be 23 suicides so far in 2010.
Therefore my question is following: Isn't the 9 less than the expected 23? Why is the media making such a huge deal out of this then? I mean I understand the working conditions there can be considered inhumane, but I consider that a whole other issue and it shouldn't be tied in with the suicide rates.
Thanks for your thoughts!
--For the people who don't know what I am talking about - Foxconn is the largest electronics manufacturer in the world and they are based in China (they build the apple products). Here is an article talking about the suicides: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5j3oGhnvg--hWMiOvxx8cAuD2yZOwD9FR86AO3
10.25/hour in Ontario
seems to be around 40% higher than the number you guys are quoting for US states.
Works out to 1781.55/month if you work 173 hours/month (which is 40hrs/week).
I am pretty sure most people can easily live on that.
So today I was going about my business when a telemarkter called me. I am a really polite guy so I talked to the person for 4-5 minutes (saying no every chance I get). However, the girl wouldn't give up and I lost my temper and hung up.
Afterwards, she called me back like 20 times saying "oh you didn't want me to call you back?" or **** like "hi who is this?"
And I gotta say, I realllllly hate these telemarketers.
What are some stratgies you guys propose to deal with this?
Btw she was cold calling and trying to ask for personal information like my name/email etc. lol. No way was I gonna give that to a complete stranger over the phone. It would just mean I would get even more calls + spam etc.
4 Sho Plus my best friend got a sociology degree and is now forced to go to trade school because he can't find any decent paying jobs. From the 4 months of job hunting he did, his one conclusion is that sociology degree is as good as no degree.u know i have to agree with TC a bit.
most of the time a lot of people spends a lot of money from pulling loans and whats not to go to a good school.
but most of the time your throwing your money away and at the end in some fields of work you wont know jack ****.
for example my brother is a EMT he went to a ROP ( regional occupational program) its like a trade school.
he only paid $800 for 8 months but it was 24/7 on the books and study meetings at barns and noble. and the instructor is a top instructor for L.A. and the CA fire department recognize her for being a good instructor.
well he passed teh coruse and got his EMT circification. and when he signed up for a job to be a EMT he got about 5 diffrent companys calling to see if he wants to get hired by them.
well he got a the job for one of the companys and its been almost 2 years now and he is moving up the ladder and he actually knows more then the people that came from the 4 year USC and UCLA.
what im trying to say is he only spent $800 for 8 months and he got a job he wanted. if he went to a 4 year like USC and UCLA (they offer the same course as the ROP. but with all that bull crap for the first 2 or 3 years then the 4th year you learn what u want to learn.) he will still be in school in major debit from the loans he will have to pull out and still will have to find a way to get a job some where.
i rather go to a trade school then a actaull college or univerity i dont want to pull loans up the @$$ and i have to put up with bull *** classes for the first few years.
you see if im goign to go to a school like USC or UCLA to learn the trade i will want to do as my career and i have to pay for it then skip teh bull**** and just teach me the trade. till that happens im not going to a big shot school like USC or UCLA
plus there in business only for the money really the can care less for the students. if they really want to make students in to somebody they wont be charging to much money. why you think the "cancelers" when you first go to them to see the school trys to hard to make u find ways to get money to pay for the schooling? they say u can pull out loans your mom and dad can pull a loan for u u can go and look for grants or u can do this or that.
really if you look at it they get paid a comission for every student they get in.
i just wish there are more trade schools then those money hungry schools

Getting a degree doesn't guarantee you a job. I wish people would understand that. Hopkins_JWhile not getting a degree almost guarantees you to not have one. (That is cushy/good pay/benefits) So which would you choose?
[QUOTE="biggest_loser"][QUOTE="surrealnumber5"] had an elective or two, and i am sure it gets harder then only showing up to the tests and getting an A but its no Accounting physics or Biology surrealnumber5How does difficulty make it a joke though... as TC said in this OP "been in college for 3 1/2 years, and i have to say, you can learn everything the professors teach you for free in your local library." thats why its a joke, if anyone can ease through the program its not hard enough and is worthless or a joke
Agreed.. I took Sociology courses to lighten my workload. Without going to classes, it takes 1 day of study b4 midterm and 1 day of study b4 the finals to get an easy A.
[QUOTE="blackngold29"][QUOTE="biggest_loser"]I find that insulting. You couldn't just go to a library and learn that stuff. You have to use it in a practical sense like writing about it with your own concepts. biggest_loserWhat does writing about it have to do with learning it? And how does the library prevent you from writing about it? You can read whatever you want about a topic but to actually process that knowledge into something useful to show that you understand it you have to use it in some way and writing about it with your own thesis about a topic shows that you can take a concept and apply it to an essay question etc. I think the TC was suggesting that you could just go into a library and read everything and that you would understand everything. It is amazing how quickly you forget things if you don't write them down. Umm...a Master's degree is self driven and it is pretty much the same thing as reading @ the library lol. You read and analyze research papers, journals etc. So, why couldn't I do that without going to University?
I really I don't think I could learn some of the skills I need for my major in a library. If that is the case with your school and major, that is unfortunate.Cube_of_MooN
what is your major, and is it an undergrad? msters? phd?
what school?
