If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I love 7, but Vista has served me well so far so I probably won't upgrade until my next major system upgrade.

EDIT: Like a doofus, I skipped the whole article. Theres no harm in taking the free upgrade if you want for your desktop, but I would save it until you have a need to reformat the system.

The laptop, on the other hand, I'd say cash in that upgrade and do it right away, especially if you just bought it.

I'm all gung ho for 64-bit, just because it's no more or less compatible than the 32-bit versions but you are no longer saddled with the 3.5 GB usable RAM limit.

A Pentium 4 should run windows XP just fine. If you aren't playing games or doing anything intensive, you shouldn't need to upgrade.

The issue is most likely that your windows install is totally corrupt from viruses and spyware.

You need to format and do a fresh install of windows.

I second this. The rig is old, certainly, but if its dogging under XP for simple non-gaming tasks, it probably needs a rebuild.

Right-click on the drive in Windows Explorer and select Properties. What is the drive format? If its FAT32, you cannot copy individual files larger than 4GB to it.

Do you have the latest drivers for your graphics card?

And the motherboard?

So you don't have any sort of Restore disc to return your system to its factory state?

Have you gone in to Programs and Features and removing the Nvidia Drivers element completely?

For those prices, you might as well just buy a laptop.

To be fair, the i860 is marked as a blazing deal. I'll bet it gets that just because it has free shipping.

Your versions were different Home Premium/Professional, I don't think that works either. Captain__Tripps

I would've thought they could at least let you upgrade if the version is higher-end than the previous. Thats disappointing.

You can add is as many drives as your motherboard has connections for and read/write data just fine without needing to format. Just don't expect to boot the old OSes on them UNLESS they were all originally loaded on your current rig. And be sure your BIOS still has your 750GB HDD as the main boot device.

It will be released to vista through a patch. I dont see reason it wouldn't as Windows 7 is basically just a Vista v1.25.

Hmm...I wonder if I will get flame for that statement.

CHC999

The more appropriate label is Windows Vista: Second Edition.
