Oh, I know this. I'm pretty sure the game you are looking for is "every first person shooter ever made".
i'm still checking out superclocked's link. i think the game has that human face below the screen like doom has. it could be doom but iirc the game has human enemies no monsters.

thanks for the suggestions everyone. i'll try red ninja since it's somewhat similar to tenchu and shinobido... has that stealth and ninja vibe going on.
