@Geardudu @chronadar To each their own I guess. I think console sales directly translate to games when you get down to it though. This gen PS3 failed out the door and Xbox 360 stomped it, but towards the end here PS3 has been coming out with some nice exclusives and it seems like the designers finally got a handle on the programming side just in time for the gen to end.
The PC will never get some of the best exclusives or I would agree 100% =/. I can remember the first time I remember this happening - really blame Microsoft with the crap they pulled with Fable, Jade Empire, and KOTOR, not to get too off topic or anything...it's not like I can blame MS for wanting to make money, but that was the first time as a PC gamer my whole life I felt like I was getting shafted.
I don't believe Halo alone could have propped up the original Xbox. It certainly did a lot for online console play though..
Hi to everyone who watched us get here from Atari and NES and can't care less about anything but games. My dumbass never even thought that PCs and consoles would merge like they have, mostly due in part to the advent of the original Xbox. I don't care if my system has an OS. I care if the game makes me dream about it day and night.
This. I've owned an NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Turbo Graphix 16 (Hey it had Bonk), Desktops, Xbox 360, N64, Gamecube, PS1, PS2, Sega Saturn, and probably some systems I'm forgetting after being awake all night. Nothing against handhelds - just can't see the screens well enough.
GAMES GAMES GAMES. Real Gamers want GAMES. Only petty fools care what system it is on.
Sony forgot this last gen. I think they have the stronger line up for launch, but nobody knows what could happen. Just stop the stupid console wars my god. People. This is not sports. No one cares. REALLY. Except me for posting this, but it's taken five years of reading posts and being awake all night to make me at least =)
I have to add...it makes me sick that Curt Schillings studio went under because love amalur or not if they had gotten a chance to make an MMO they had SOME GREAT STUFF in there. They needed a serious generic quest overhaul, but anyone who played the game should know what I mean. Amalur was by NO MEANS a perfect game., but it kills me when you see the POTENTIAL and passion, yet no follow-up ever comes to fruition, in this case an MMO was always the idea.
There's more titles like this, but Amalur was a tragedy in how some of it's mechanics may have translated to an MMORPG.
Bottom line. New generations will always play MMORPGs, but if anyone wants to recreate WoWs success we need some innovation and odds are the MMOs to come will not be nearly as profitable as the past. Most will move to a F2P setup with items you can buy. This model has worked too well on mobile, as well as on PC games to be ignored even though I never buy virtual goods personally.
WoW isn't going anywhere. Everquest was down to 200,000 subs in 2003 when WoW came out and it is STILL RUNNING. They've had something like 15 expansions since I quit. There will be a healthy population for many years to come. I quit before Cata came out because it was just old by then, although I liked WOTLK on some levels.
On the other hand, I feel like this genre is really old and played out to most of the older crowd. I was a hardcore player from age 15-23, but things change. I don't even have time anymore. I'm waiting for some INNOVATION. This genre is DYING for it. GW2 at least brought a few new ideas to the table, but not nearly enough... after all the complete MMO letdowns over the decade (Old Republic/D3 although not an MMO the largest two in history for me) and nothing new and interesting on the horizon things are looking bleak for this genre altogether, but PROFITABLE? Yea games like WoW will be turning a profit for many, many years.
The only game I'm watching is Elder Scrolls Online due to the fact that it might be NOVEL. I admit I haven't kept up the past year so if there's any other new games feel free to enlighten me, but I haven't heard of any.
