ooooh thats tough to do, i don't think its possible to do for an average computer person, if you REALLY need that essay and REALLY don't want to re-write it, there are company's that do that for a price.

With the cash your planning on spending i don't think its worth it at all to keep the current pc, as that processor is way outdated and probably couldn't handle the home theatre. (Just my opinion)

no, its not good enough for gaming, id get a better graphics card and 2 more gigs of ram, also maybe a quad core for future gaming, look to spend $1000+ for a gaming rig (plus monitor is extra)

My best guess without looking at your pc, is that your fan has gotten a little bit warped and is grinding against the side, try taking a closer look at it and see
