They forgot the biggest reason of all that Sony would drop out - they can't afford the PS3 and PSVita as it is, much less another home console. SCE hasn't turned a profit in eight years and counting, and no Sony division has turned a profit in three years plus. Add in their credit rating being reduced and all of the lawsuits as of late, and Sony is in no position to make a gen-8 console.
