You can feel it in the air, it's that time of the year again where the sun shines, the grass gets dry, the days are longer and nights shorter and E3 is around the corner. But who cares bout that >_>
Just kidding, E3 is around the corner guys developers and companies unveil their new releases for the next year and you get to see what kind of stuff you'll be putting in your thumbs soon enough, aren't you excited??! I know I am.
While the wait and the excitement is really good sometimes there are a few things that may ruin E3 for you, Last year I made a blog like this but now that I'm on the moderating team I figured I could use my little experience acquired from seeing some user behavior in the boards todo some tweaks here and there and make these tips more complete. While some have tips to follow in order to make E3 more enjoyable I present you:
"10 Tips you should NOT follow in order to make E3 more enjoyable" 2011 Edition
1."E3 is more important than school, who cares if I have my history final today?? I'm being part of GAMING history that should count as my final!!"
While this may be a good reason for you to miss school I don't think your teacher will probably agree on this. Don't let E3 affect your school performance if you have to make a choice remember school is FIRST you have no idea on the trouble I got back in high school for not going to school on E3 days, I had to do harder exams or larger homeworks . The future of gaming history can be watched in HD after you get homefrom school too! there is no need to get desperate . I know that E3 schedule might not be the best for those who go to school from 9 to 3 pm. But no gaming news is worth an F in an assigment. Hmm maybe Half-Life Episode 3....
2."Do a mix of Red Bull, Monster Energy, Coffee and Dura Cell batteries in order to stay awake"
I know the E3 scheduleis not the best for some of us. While the Gamespot Staff have to be up there early in the morning some of us might need to be in front of our screens late at night.I remember how some users used to drink cofee and all sorts of stuff all night long just to see that PS3 launch event, while this is a good way to keep you awake it can limit your performance in your next day activities, don't stay awake til 1 or 2 am just to watch a live coverage (if you live far away) and don't stay awake all night because you're afraid you won't wake up in time to see the event, it is better to get a good night sleep, then again if you feel you can handle the pressure I can't stop you…just let me know what duracell batteries taste like
3."If the page isn't loading the website is to blame, Unleash your wrath in the comments section"
Every.Single.Year I see this, the video window says "Streaming" but you don't see or hear anything then someone posts "It has already started!" And you begin to lose patience, this is gaming history we are talking about Gamespot!!! I demand my video liek rite NAO !! I'm missing some minutes!!! After a while you completely lose patience and go to the comment section and flood it with negative comments about the website in general. And then someone tells you to be cool, who are they to tell you to be cool! YOU ARE COOL!!!
Nah Seriously :P, this is a common issue but please keep in mind that it is a live stream and thousands of people are watching it. We are supposed to have at least some lag before it gets good. It usually takes about4 or 5 mins at the most for you to be able to see the conference so be patient, use this time to go to the bathroom, grab a snack, answer that phone that has been ringin all morning. You don't want to be interrupted in the middle of the conference. If you lose patience you're not helping anyone if you go through the comments saying "This sux!" I have yet to encounter an event here on GS where I miss the whole conference due to streaming issues. For real, most of the conferences appear after a little time waiting, just be patient.
4."Who cares about the ToU, no one can see what I type on chat, anarchy I say!!!"
Careful, gamespot offers a chat where you can interact with other users but that doesn't mean the Terms of Use is invallid there, you can still get moderated for posting something that goes against the rules in that chat, mods and admins can keep track of the chat interaction so be careful with what you post there, last year I saw a very....open minded chat and everyone was like, post away! you can't get modded here!...WRONG! which brings me to the next tip to ignore.
5."I can't watch a conference so I'll give my password to my friend and he'll watch it for me and I will win the emblem I'm so smart!!!! :D"
Be EXTRA careful with this thing guys, don't give your Gamespot password to anyone and if you do (which againI remind you "don't") at least pick someone who has your complete trust. It's no surprise that some people do this, personally I've done it in the past but I usually gave itto someone I deeply trusted, a brother or a friend, the keyword here is "TRUST" and not the Megadeth Song.I've seen some cases of guys that give their password to their accounts to the wrong people and bad things happen.
You give your password to your little brother or little cousin or dog or that friendly user you met in the boards yesterday and they watch the conference grant you the emblem but they join the chat and start flaming, posting stuff that is disruptive or simply breaking the ToU without even knowing. They have nothing to fear it's not their account and the one who has to pay for the broken plates it's you. Yes! you! who cares if it was your dog and not you using your account, while breaking the rules. It's YOUR account for a reason, you are solely responsible for it!! Last thing you would want is to get banned because of someone else's fault but of course that is only an extreme case, still within the possibilities though.
As a last security meassure, if you give your password to someone be sure to change it after they finish using your account, while they may not do any harm to your account, who knows if they get hacked in the future and the hacker finds the password you forgot to change and hacks your account and gets you banned. We don't want that now do we??
Be VERY careful when giving your password to someone else, you can never stress this enough.
6." I got lost in the E3 page it is so confusing I didn't get to see the coverage in time, shame on you GS!!"
If I could get a dollar for everytime I've heard this I'll probably have enough to go to the E3, I must say that this has happened to me, once during my early years I tried to see sony's coverage but there were lots of videos and I had a hard time looking for the right one while battling against my computer lag and slow Internet connection at that time it can get pretty frustrating. E3 is still a few days away so you have enough time to familiarize with the page. Try simulating how will you act before each conference, what you'll click, it helpsto bookmark thevideos you want tosee before they start so you don't get lost.Another good thing you can use is to avoid downloading things while youload videos since this can affect the streaming , you have to be prepared if you want to catch your shows on time. What's the point if the website offers you the best weapons for you to watch the shows if you don't know how to use them??
7. "The Gamespot Schedule is fine I'll just follow it and I'll catch my shows on time"
Careful, sometimes GS posts a Schedule in a certain time zone and it may not be accurate for everyone, this year's calendar is on Pacific time so if you live in any other time zone it would be good for you to look for a Time Zone Converter to get your correct local time. This is one of the reasons people miss their shows don't be one of those and double check just in case.
8. "Who cares about E3?! Emblems is what really matters"
Ahh yess E3 emblems, Gamespot has a tradition on giving away many of those cute little images for tuning up to the live coverage and that is the main reason most people here tend to do even the imposible just to get them. While it is not a bad thing some people abuse and get really REALLY pissed off when they don't get them. Remember E3 is not just about emblem is about gaming news, Emblems are just a way to encourage you to look at the news not a way to force you to watch them.
9. "I missed the E3 emblems!!! E3 sucks!!"
Don't be sad if you missed some emblems despite watching every live show. It happens I've been in Gs for almost 4 years and have seen almost every E3 coverage and I've only gotten one 1 set of emblems and I'm not really sad about that. I've seen some people make a huge deal about that in the boards and they inmediately change their minds about the E3 thanks to that. There are many reasons perhaps you were not at the right time or perhaps you just commented and didn't watch or perhaps you didn't watch long enough, try to watch the whole thing, post in the comments and hang around the chat for a whilejust to make sure . And even if you do this and don't get the emblem there's usually a thread for missing emblems posted in the boards after E3 is over, but please don't do like some people who posts there and start demanding that they should be given their emblems NAO! Be respectul when requesting a missing emblem, try to only post ONCE and edit your post if you feel you should add something. Missing emblems might take a while to be given out because staff have to manually check every user's story to make sure they're met the requirements, it's a tedious process and it takes a good share of time. I missed some E3 emblems last year and I got them nearly 2 months later, but the important part is I got them. Just be patient if you met the requirements have no fear, you'll get your emblems :)
10. "E3 is over…forget about it"
Wait...WHAT?! You just watched E3 and you are just gonna stay there?? Discuss!! That's where the fun part start, discuss with your friends and fellow Gs members in the respective E3 threads on the Gamespot Boards about the latest E3 news, Tell the World Aboutthe PS4or Call of Duty MW3 ! It is always good to see what other people think about the game. Be in the Gamespot staff's shoes for a sec they traveled thousands of miles, faced the greatest of dangers, missed the most amount of sleep time in order to bring you the most complete E3 coverage the least you can do for them is give them some feedback on what you liked and what you didn't about the E3 coverage in order to make the next one even better
E3 season is one of the best ones the expectation, the hype and the excitement all around the boards is quite contagious I must say I'm really excited to see this year's coverage and looks like GS is going all out this time. Just remember to NOT follow these tips and just my comments :P, You'll most likely have a great E3 experience.
Until Next Time
See ya!!
