[QUOTE="distrbdslipsoad"][QUOTE="Mordred19"] There really is no excuse these days for not having visible feet in FPSs.
I am really tired of silent protagonists. That problem almost ruined my experience with Bioshock. It seems as if writers are afraid of creating a compelling character because it might be too hard.

i disagree. if the developers can pull it off, then by all means leave out voice work for the protagonist. take link in the wind waker for instance. all we whitnessed from the kid were tiny yelps and facial expressions, yet at the very end of the game i felt so much more attached to him than most characters with dialouge.
It works, until I give the idea the tinieset instant of serious thought, then the concept falls apart on me. I cannot accept that persons thrown into serious, large scale, life-or-death struggles would get by without having to vocally interact with anyone around them, whether it's asking for crucial information, or communicating with others to proceed. In the case of Link and Gordon Freeman, they get a free pass because they have a long history of being silent, and suddenly having something to say today would be jarring and would clash with the "continuity" (if you want to call it that).
Games like FEAR and Bioshock did the silent protagonist bit, and if the developers for those gameswanted a fully-realized story in their universes, the silent route isn't the best one.
in the instance of bioshock, the silence shown with jack was completely acceptable. on the plane, he spoke for a few moments, then the infamous crash followed. after that he hardly said a word. it further drove home just how eerie being in such a torn city like rapture is. plus taking into account the later half of the game, (i won't spoil the story for anybody) it cleared up why he's a mute walking through rapture.
