@Lulu_Lulu: The main draw of the souls game is the combat itself, filler in a souls game would be unskippable cutscenes. The game is always autosaving every second so even if you die, you retain all your items. At least itemwise your progression always continues, and that's where dying can even become part of gameplay mechanic through suicide runs. Filler in souls game would also include waiting for getting summoned.

Now on the other hand let's say you're playing an action adventure game where the cutscenes are why you play to get more story out of it. If checkpoints are placed so if you die during a fight near the end of the level and are brought back to the middle of the level where you have to go and pick up items again and go through everything again, that's pretty much filler. A good action adventure game would have checkpoints placed close to each other to avoid fillers, I think Uncharted does that quite well.

You should know not to bait me when it comes to souls Lulu. :P

I don't know much about this Lulu person but it seems like most people try to avoid arguing with him. I'm surprised you did.

I believe in giving everyone a fair chance for a good rebuttal every once in a while, even Lulu. :P

@Lulu_Lulu: Not being summoned, but I meant the wait to get summoned. Waiting for being summoned is filler because you're doing nothing. That's exactly what's never supposed to happen.

As for deailing with all the enemies, you can run past them and go straight to the boss fight. All depends on how you wish to play.

However many or as less, as long as they're well utilized. Dishonored does it pretty well.

Really depends what kind of game it is, though generally I prefer the souls way as long as the game's more combat focused. If it's a *ahem* cinematic action adventure then it better not make me go through the whole damn thing from the previous checkpoint. All depends on what's the main draw for the game, if a fail state makes you go through filler then that's definitely bad game design.

Mass Effect 3 only because of the MP. Put more hours into the MP than I did with the main game. Oddly enough when the final game released I didn't touch the MP at all.

Also the recent Toukiden Kiwami demo, so good.
