It's good to see System Wars united like this in hating Polygon, thanks for reminding me why I like this community.
As much as I dislike Polygon, I can see their point. I don't currently own any of the new gen consoles, and the only home consoles I've owned have been Sony (PS2 and PS3). I've never owned a Nintendo home console, only two of their handhelds (GBC and DS). I've been thinking about whether to purchase a new gen console and which one to buy and I'm not interested, the PS4 and Xbox Three don't have many exclusives that interest me (though we're still in the transition period between two gens), a lot of their best games are available on PC or even still on PS3. I'm starting to think maybe a Wii U might be a good choice just because of the variety of exclusive content it has. Even if I am sick of Nintendo constantly peddling games with their stupid characters like Mario in.
It occurs to me that Nintendo are the only big three that have managed to successfully maintain two popular platforms at once, because they enforce a division between them. Their handheld consoles are always very different to their home consoles, mainly in terms of graphical capability but in terms of control input as well. Sony's handhelds were just treated like portable versions of the home console, such that all of the best PSP games ended up on PS2/3, and the PSV isn't getting many exclusives (except the countless japanese exclusives for it), meaning there wasn't much reason to get either one. And a lot of good Xbox games seem to end up on PC, which Microsoft still benefits from. I cannot think of any widely known Xbox-exclusive franchises other than Halo, so I can see why they stopped releasing it on PC after Halo 2.
