I'm having the same problem, though it comes and goes for me in the game. I had to use my 360 to get my free month of gold, because the xbox website wouldn't let me sign in.

I got a Samsung HD-TV too, i haven't used my ps2 yet on it, and im hoping to get the 360 soon. Also it has an option called " Game Mode", in the Manual it says "to Enjoy playing on consoles like Playstation or Xbox"...i'm hoping to Get the 360 soon :) 

Game mode, just so you know, reduces the upscaling to reduce any lag that is commonly experienced when gaming. But if you're using a 360 or ps3, don't turn on game mode, since the source signal will be high enough that it will require very little if any upscaling.

To unlock red blocks you have to be mario, then go into the main hall thing and look up at the light, it should take you to a flying level, then there's a button that you need to step on, and voila, all blocks are solid.

Then to unlock luigi I suggest you go to the game guides at IGN, since I don't really enjoy typing that much, and it's slightly difficult to explain. Good luck.

Tip: When killing boos, stand away from them and wait for them to get close, then jump and ground pound rather than turning around and punching them.
