Hmm... I guess I'll be the first (ex) gamestop employee to reply. Yikes!
I'm just posting some random tidbits here about my experience so sorry if it all seems random.
I'm not a big fan of gamestop. I worked there for about 3 months and it was my second worst job ever (worst ever was Barnes and Noble :x) and I only really hated it when I started working there.
You get treated like crap as an employee. You're forced to offer every stupid deal and ask a million questions for every transaction. So to those of you that hate this, I understand, but please don't be jerks. They have to do it.
One good thing I can still say is that I think the Edge card is a decent deal. I didn't feel as guilty as I did selling B&N's rip-off card. You get a magazine and 10% extra on trade-in values and 10% off used games.
When looking at trade-ins, when I was first trained, my manager told me, "Get it refurbished if it looks bad, use your judgement." Then when I actually started doing trade-ins, my manager told me,"Well, yeah, but REALLY it just costs us more money to get it refurbished so pretty much everything is sold as is." And by "pretty much everything" he really meant, "everything". So a lot of stuff could be cleaned and could work but isn't, so the "Guaranteed to Work!" stuff is bull. But you will get a refund, so it's not so bad.
Yes new games are used sometimes. Employees are allowed to borrow new games. The only way you know if it's new is if you get a wrapped up copy. Something to keep in mind.
I too am very against the gutting thing. You're not allowed to return new games because of this. Oh! But you can get trade-in value of 20 bucks for that 60 dollar game you bought yesterday but was accidently the wrong one! That's the worst, I felt so guilty when this sort of thing happened. It's the way Gamestop looks out only for itself- "it doesn't matter if the customer got a defect, we'll lose money."
One of the good things is, the used games are a good price. I've bought quite a few cheap games that were in new condition.
I hated having to card everyone for Mature games. If I didn't card someone (even if they're OBVIOUSLY older than 17) I got a warning that I could be fined by the ESRB for 10 million dollars or some other bull. So I'm sorry people have to get carded but that's just the way it is. Get over it.
I think the reason most people hate gamestop is for the rip-off trade-in values. Now, I get that it doesn't seem fair that you get so little and they sell it for so much. But really, it's your choice to do it. It's a lot simpler than using ebay as you don't have to set up an auction and all. And they wanna make a profit, plus a lot of it will sit around and never get sold.
I have a $40 gift card still so I just went in there today to try and get ANOTHER PS2 memory card. The first one didn't work and this one has corrupt memory. So I now have to take a third trip to get a refund. I'm not buying one of their overpriced new ones though I'm ordering some new from somewhere else. I think this next trip to spend the remaining money will be my last.
