Really? Its freaking 2014 and we're still doing this kind of stuff? So what is the bs excuse this time? They can't use the same one they use for real sports so what is it?
Supposedly by only allowing us to play in tournaments specifically designated for female gamers I guess it is somehow going to promote female gaming, Yeah only allowing us to play in lesser tournaments just for us and for lesser prizes will really help a lot..They are basically saying we can't compete with the male players. LOL Did I go back in time to like 2000 or something? Do they not know that many of the best gamers around these days are women?
If these people really don't think that we can compete, I'd love to see them play against me or Envy on an FPS game. We would make them believers really fast. ;O) I'm so freaking tired of seeing this crap.
Hmm, before this debate even needs to begin i wonder is there even any female gamers good enough or even wants to compete in the competition?
LOL Jac.
Such good laughs, I cannot stress how much I appreciate reading your posts. My hats off to you. Thank you.
Not half as much as i enjoy reading yours Anita ;)
But do please justify why anyone should get angry over this if no females even want to compete in the tournament or is good enough.
And remember there is no such thing as positive discrimination so i hope you're not suggesting that this competition should include females who are not qualified to even be there?
You really need me to explain?
You're defending the segregation of genders in a digital card game tournament. Why should anyone get angry over that? Hm...
No, Jacanuk just want to keep this debate from becoming sexist toward males. His/Her mind set is coming from treat male and female gamers the same and see what happens.
I don't get what you mean, but, his support of the segregation of genders (circa late 1800's) is the opposite of treating female and male gamers the same. So I assume you're calling him out for that.

And i did read what you said , you said factually and thats simply not true when you look at what games is on most gamers list.
There is more to the sentence than the word factually, hopefully you would be able to focus on what facts I was referencing. :)
Yes there sure is but we don't have to agree here :) lets just say i'm pointing out that if we look at a top 50 list over what games gamers like, 24 out of 47 is where females have a significant role, either 100% playable or such a huge part of the story that it would fall apart without them.
So complaining over lack of female characters is a bit dated.
And Fade lets make a deal you ignore me and ill ignore you and we both will have a much better experience on Gamespot. deal?
I have a wonderful experience on GameSpot, including the moments where I get to point out your sexism. You're free to ignore me, of course.
And you and I both know your 24 out of 47 is a special kind of bullshit. Let's not pretend like you've even played all 50 games on that list, so how would you even know in the first place? Doesn't even matter.
We could debate back and forth about what constitutes a "huge part of the story" when it comes to female characters in gaming...let's not forget you'd include AC4 (a game we both know you haven't played for any meaningful amount of time) in your list of 24, so uh.. your credibility is smashed. If it wasn't already..
Regardless, what you can't seem to understand is that the mere inclusion of women in a game doesn't mean anything. I don't know why that's so hard for you to understand.
I also don't understand why you think you know more than the dozens and dozens and dozens and dozens of game developers who state the gaming industry is rife with sexism. I could, and have, provided you with countless links where game developers state as much, and it doesn't seem to matter to you. You seem to think you know more than they do in their own field of expertise. Keep living blind, Jac. Ignoring me might help!
Not at all. I think game developers should create the character they think best fits their design ideal, rather than bending over backwards for a bunch of overly-loud social justice warriors.
There are plenty of games with strong female leads already, and if women want greater representation in the gaming industry, they need to take the initiative and start making the games they want to see.
Plenty is a relative term. However, main female characters are factually the minority in game. The same apply for race. And we all know that making a game is particularly easy, you simply just make one. :|
Are you really trying to claim that women aren't represented in games?
Ok, lets test your argument.
Top 50 games of 2013 as decided by the users of eurogamer http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-12-31-eurogamer-readers-top-50-games-of-2013
24 games with clear female presence or a option to play as a female which is a majority of the 24. and if you remove the sports&Racing games that is 24 out of 47 games so its 50/50. So no female characters are not a minority in games
How about reading what I actually type versus making up what I typed?
We both know better than to argue with Jacanuk. Come on.
He's suggesting that because games merely include women (and that their game worlds aren't all-male) that automatically means there isn't a problem with gender representation in video games. Is there 20 minutes of gameplay associated with a female character in a 40 hour game? It counts!.. to him.
In all seriousness, though, this topic is one of the more interesting issues within gaming, because there's a sizable portion of employees within the industry itself who've stated sexism is an issue. And of course, a good portion of journalists (who's job it is to know what's going on within the gaming industry) concur with the sentiment that sexism is a bad part of the gaming industry.
So when you've got a substantial amount developers who literally are the gaming industry, plus a respectable amount of journalists all saying sexism is a problem, what more needs said?
I'll take all of their opinions over a few consumers who either "don't give a shit" or think any game that includes a female for a few cutscenes proves the game itself isn't sexist.
GameSpot cleverly worded the poll, either by mistake or on purpose. I think it was on purpose because of the ellipsis (...) at the end of the fourth choice.
But is anyone else laughing at those who selected option 4? You don't care what the main character is? So he could be a Nazi rapist that kills children, and that's cool? You just like video games!
Try thinking.
^ that's directed at Gamespot if they mistakenly worded their poll. Be more specific, and, though I'm no grammar expert, would it hurt to put a little more effort in, when it comes to sentence composition?
I mean, "I don't care what the main character is..."
Of course the natural thing to think is, "you mean male or female," but, due to failed grammar, fair interpretations like the one I made above are completely valid.
The amount of people in this thread that think I'm actually proposing turning Geralt into a woman is pretty hilarious. Reading comprehension of roughly zero.
I'm referring to the fact that in the Witcher, the player has no choice but to play as a male protagonist, one that can only be slightly customized in terms of hair, personality, armor, etc. I'm wondering if a role-playing game series could be started in this day and age of gaming with a locked female protagonist, and have similar levels of success. I understand that there are many other factors that played into the Witcher's success.
But hey, the goal was to start a discussion, and we got over 30 posts, so mission accomplished, I guess.
I won't quote your original post, but I found the idea of your thread quite interesting, if only for the fact that CD Projekt Red wanted (and intended for)the Witcher series to have a female protagonist, as evidenced by them here.
I don't know if you knew that, and were eventually going to post it, but yes, CD Projekt Red originally planned for the Witcher series to have a female lead.
Unfortunately, publisher studies/"input" quickly nixed that idea, causing them to change quite a few aspects regarding their franchise, including the gender of the protagonist.
Which is why I disagree with your original post. Yes, there are people out there (the white knights, as you deem them) who still find sometimes ridiculous ways to criticize a game that perhaps might be forward thinking when it comes to a fairer gender representation within its virtual world. But that doesn't even matter, simply because most publishers shut down the chance of a female protagonist franchise (be it open world RPG or otherwise) due to the obvious data that, sadly, most gamers are sexist.
Most people in this thread will tell you it wouldn't make a difference to them whether Geralt was female or male. That's because they have the luxury of never having to prove it. They can say anything they'd like. I could say I generously give to charities on a regular basis, and you'd never be able to prove I was lying. Same situation here.
But, as big name publishers know, the gender of a protagonist does make a difference when it comes to the sales and marketing of a game. It's sad, but it's true. This leads them to making the smart financial decision of "suggesting" a male lead to a developer who might have been thinking otherwise. That's the reality we live in, currently.
And to Jacanuk, who surely is going to come in here and refute the claim that developers get told what to do by publishers, I'm just going to quote back to our old thread and re-link every example cited that proves my point. Please don't waste either of our time.
Hey man I'm Irish we'll bet on anything.

And I'll easily take a professional bookie shorting the odds on cash money gambling over a whisper and "trade sources" any day of the week.
Lol, fair enough, but keep in mind, this isn't a whisper or a trade source. These are official, documented numbers. The statistics come from a report, not a rumor.
Maybe in the US, it certainly doesn't look that way here in the UK. Bookies that are taking bets on it have even shortened the odds on the PS4.
Yesterday the UK Amazon top 100 best sellers list had the Xbox one behind not just one but two different PS4 SKUs (and Just Dance 2014 for the Wii, which is very, very wrong lol). And the Xbox One launches here before the PS4, in about half an hour to be exact, the PS4 won't be out until the 29th
IGN is partnered with GAME, UK's biggest gaming retailer. That would indicate that the mere 10% disparity applies to the UK as well. Trends are... trendy, meaning, whatever GAME's pre-order numbers are, you can bet they won't be that much different (in consumer preference) from other non-IGN partnered retailers.
