Got a Wii!

Aaaaaand I only had to wait 7.5 hours in a heated Lawn and Garden center of Wal-Mart, to boot! I was second in line. :) Picked up Excite Truck, Rayman Raving Rabbids, and Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam. ^_^

I played it a little bit last night, and it was a ton of fun. Don't let GameSpot dissuade you from trying out Excite Truck--it's really a fun game. Like nothing you've ever played before.

WiFi is up and working, but the weather and news channels are not "in service" yet, which was disappointing. I'm going to go try uploading some photos from an SD card to it right now. Should be fun!

Later gators!

Club House Waiting Games

I'm kind of annoyed with Club House Games.

First of all, they ruined the casino games experience. Allowing a negative bankroll is a huge no-no. Limiting betting in Texas Hold'em? That sucks the fun out of it. My pulse always quickens every time I go all-in, because I'm down to my last chips and I might be out of the game. There's really no risk in CHG's Texas Hold'em or Blackjack games.

Secondly, it's so hard to find other people playing games on WiFi. Sure, there's always somebody lurking in the Bowling lobby, but how many times can one person play bowling?

I nearly died last night when I actually found someone to play against at Rummy. I sat in the lobbies of five other games (Last Card Plus, Sevens, Word Ballon, Texas Hold'em, and Blackjack) for 2 minutes a piece, without finding an opponent.

Before you tell me I am not waiting around long enough, let me just say that I don't have all day. If I sit in the bowling lobby, it takes less than 30 seconds for the server to pair me up with someone. I'm hoping that more people will be online after Thanksgiving.
I have a ton of games that are sitting at 0 plays because I can never find anyone to play against.

Anyway, that's my big beef with CHG. I like the game otherwise, just wish the WFC component was more satisfying.

What are your experiences with online aspect of this game?

Maybe I Could Be An Attorney

I finished Phoenix Wright last night. What a fantastic game! I hope Capcom utilizes the investigation tools more in the sequel. I'm considering importing it, because I don't want to wait a whole year to play it. The US version probably won't be any different from the Japanese version anyway. I don't know though, I'll have to think about it some more.

While I'm waiting, I can play Mario Hoops 3-on-3. My girlfriend gave that to me as an anniversary gift tonight. She's so thoughtful. :P Three years down, a lifetime to go! Yeah, that was corny, huh? Heh.

If I had enough money, I would buy another DS so we could play Mario Hoops multiplayer. We keep trying to find all these multiplayer games for the Cube and PS2, when really all we need is a second DS. Then we could play Bomberman, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, New Super Mario Bros, and Mario Hoops. Maybe I'll be able to sometime this year. :

I'm really hoping to get a job before Thanksgiving. I've applied for three different positions, two with the local newspaper and one with the local TV station, but I didn't get called for any interviews. :( That really gets me down.

I think I'm going to have to swallow my pride and apply for a retail job. I was really hoping to get a job actually relevant to my degree, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen soon. I've been trying to do this web design business (which is also irrelevant to my degree, ha!), but it's not doing as well as I'd hoped. In all fairness, I haven't advertised outside of my forum signature, profile web sites, and so on (i.e. the free ways). I was thinking about paying to run an advertisement in the newspaper for it. I'm not sure how in-demand web design services are for this area, but it's worth a shot. I've been looking at Craigslist a lot for freelance jobs, but most business seem to want to hire a web designer as a temporary position. In other words, not a virtual job. Since I live in the sticks now, that's kind of a must.

I'm just trying my hardest to keep my head up through all of this. It's certainly rough on me; I will admit. It doesn't help that it seems like everyone who should be supporting me has nothing to offer me but their criticism. In a way I should be grateful for this, as it makes me realize the true characters of my friends. That doesn't make it any easier, however.

Phoenix Wright

My Amazon backorder of Phoenix Wright finally came! Woohoo!

On a side note, I love that there's a category for blogs now. Like what else would we be writing about but games? Haha.

Psycho indeed

I've been playing Psychonauts lately. What a trippy game. There is almost too much plot--certainly too many cut scenes. It was a full 10 minutes before I was even able to start playing. I expect that from an arrogant RPG, but not  simple platformer. Pick and play is why I like platformers so much.

Anyhoo.

It's a fun little game, certainly keeping me entertained. The controls are sometimes unresponsive and targeting is not calibrated well at all. I like that it is a very adult game. Very heady.

It's certainly making me relive my college pychology class days.

___________________________________________
Total - $216.15

I have to say, Donkey Konga 2 and Donkey Konga: Jungle Beat are a lot of fun. My girlfriend really likes them too. And we have a friend coming to visit this weekend, so we went out and bought another set of Bongos, bringing us up to three sets.

Before July is out, I'm sure I'll wind up with a copy of Donkey Konga 1. Might as well get all the games that use the Bongos since we have three sets now!

For now though, me and my credit card need a break.

Wii didn't think about disabilities

The Nintendo Wii is getting a ton of hype about its controller (and its name). Most of it well deserved, because it is a revolutionary idea that will change how games are played and perceived.

However, there are a few points in the back of my head that no one has seemed to acknowledge. The first of which, is what if I don't want to move all the hell around when I'm playing a game? Sometimes it's very nice to just sit back on the couch and veg while playing The Legend of Zelda or Final Fantasy. What if I don't want to have to swing my arms around when I play the next reincarnation of Super Smash Brothers? I blame Dance Dance Revolution for this.

Seondly, I read stories all the time about how video games assist handicapped and paralyzed individuals gain more hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. The Wii controller seems to shut out a lot of people with disabilities (one thing perhaps Nintendo didn't consider). It's one thing for games like DDR, Donkey Konga, Guitar Hero, etc., to utilize a more physical control scheme because it's only a handful of games. But when it's an entire system, it can marginalize a large number of people.

So for the sake my laziness and people who have limited mobility, I hope each game will still be able to be played with the classic controller add-on.

Unemployed again

I quit my job on Monday. So now I have a lot of free time. I've been playing The Urbs (DS) and, of course, Animal Crossing.

I bought Bomberman Jetters (GC) a few days ago on eBay for the bargain basement price of $9.00 including shipping. I shouldn't be buying things since I quit my job, but I couldn't pass that up. I think it has a better multiplayer mode than Bomberman Generation (GC) does. You can pick different styles of Bombermen and more variety of venues to play in.

I'm excited about Tetris DS coming out this month. And Super Princess Peach (DS) is already out. Here's hoping I get a job soon, so I can afford to buy them!

This weekend my girlfriend and I are headed to Chicago to see the Vagina Monologues and hang out with some friends. Should be a good time. Definitely bring the DS along for the ride since it's 4 hours there and 4 hours back.

On a side note, my cat is being really strange and laying on my shoulder, supporting himself. I wish I had a camera. Look ma, no hands!

Nintendo WiFi

I finally got my DS to connect for WiFi play! The only problem is I have to turn my firewall off in order to do it. That's no good.

I'm using ZoneAlarm's Basic (Free) firewall right now. So it looks like I'm going to have to find a different one. Any recommendations? It doesn't have to be free.

I also need to find some WiFi friends. :( At the moment, the only WiFi game I have is Animal Crossing, so...if you've got that one exchange friend codes with me! I'm lonely!
