Next to Miyamoto, nobody has had a bigger impact on our industry than Carmack. Don't blame him for Rage...he's not a game designer, but a tech wizard. The engine itself did what it was intended to do,, namely look great and run at 60fps on console. Carmack achieved his goal there.
Also besides Doom and Quake, let's not forget Commander Keen, which was the first true side-scrolling game on PC, thanks to Carmack.
I think the Rift is his chance to bring us another revolution.
One may see a small difference in visual fidelity when it comes to exclusive content, but multi-platform games will probably look very similar, if not the same.
And to the idiot who asked who John Carmack was...buddy, GTFO.
