@NBAmaster33: The original one. Mass effect is a game which revolves arround a quite hard science ficction context. And as any intelligent science fiction construct it will take references from other great works, and/or great concepts. The ending of mass effect 3 reminded me a lot of the ending in Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama series. (which I recommend A LOT (: )
The protegonists, in a moment of unprecedented dissaster, struggle and make great, enormous efforts and sacrifices to preserve the continuity of their race or in this case, of their meaningfull reality or status-quo. After a while, they realize they've been confronting not only a great threat, but the biggest threat there is. In both cases (rama and ME3) in the form of beings or "intelligences" developed far, far beyond what is knowledgeable by them. Call it a class IV or V civilization, or even a Godlike being.
The struggle of the protagonists does not end up in the salvation and preservation of the status quo. They face a force which is utterly unbeatable, but, they had gone long enough to recieve an answer. The intelligence takes a shape which the human can undestand and provides an explanation. The answer is that they've strayed away from the great design: The search of an universe of extreme harmony. War and power as they know it does not mean anything in the great scheme of things, and their reality will be terminatd, so other beings can have a chance at achieving universal harmony. Everything is wiped and the galaxy is once again in silence.
Now, after that, the normandy with the rest of the crew travels to other galaxy and get a chance of starting over. That was kind of cheesy I must admit, but it was needed because as it is an american game, heroes cannot be killed or the public will cry and complain.
What I found terrific was the boldness to get up to such an interesting and intelligent cannonical ending for the series, without falling to giving the player the classic good ol' reward and saving the universe, getting the girl and one million dollars cash. It really takes guts to kill the protagonist, shove all your effort off the table and tell you " Im sorry, but the universe is far more than guns and war assets. All your efforts are fruitless in the great scheme of things."

I still think ME3's ending was terrific.

Graund breaking, never seen before, etc. It certainly is quite like listening to politicians 2 months before elections. Gratuitous promises no one believes.

I remeber trying this one out. The infinite loading screens were enough to make me quit quite early. Such an ugly, desolate, disgunsting piece of s**t of a game.
