It does check the net during install, and looking at the case right now, dead center on the bottom of the front "Internet connection required" its safe to assume that yes, you need to have an internet connection.

SP was perfect for me, but in MP Im golden till my first encounter, when i fire there is a 1-2 second pause, I end up dead, and its butter smooth there after. It's very odd. I've tried shooting randomly to "fake" an encounter, but still, first person i run into, freeze, then smooth on the respawn.

Fantastic argument. You win the internet sir. And just a heads up. If you happened to alt tab for some reason when you where talking about the graphical errors with trees that seems to be the cause. I had alt-tabbed for some music and the trees where flickering all over the screen, including the middle of the road.
You have 1 less core and 500MHz slower clock speed. Derp.
