[QUOTE="jakarai"]It's the worst single player game I have ever played all the way through. I give the game a 7 at best and that's because of the high production values.GunSmith1_basic

A little harsh but you can't argue with opinion. Actually don't give it points for production values. Don't rate the devs, rate the game, who cares what it achieved from a technical standpoint, it doesn't effect your enjoyment of the game. Give it a 6 or a 5 if that is what it deserves.

GTA4 would have got a good score even if there wasn't a single mission in the game though. If the game said, "here is a beautiful world with realistic, fleshy people, now go F%*K it UP!!" then that would still be an amazing gaming experience in its own right. You have to give props for the game world and the fun outside the main game. Look at prototype or web of shadows. Maybe a better main game, but those souless game worlds drag those games to a lower class than GTA4

This topic got big over night. I'll start with you :). Yes, I'll give the game props for doing what it did, I'll admit that I'm impressed by what the devs have done. But how can I say its a great game if the gameplay didn't back it up? If you read my post you'd know that I said I wasn't going to give it points for technical prowness or even origionality. If the game is bad, its bad, and the budget of the game isn't going to change that.

The word "blog" comes to mind

HermitGTX

Yes, but would you comment on my blog. I don't think enough people would read it. TBF, it doesn't belong in system wars either. But hey, you clicked the thread. I'm sorry you weren't enlightened. Try again next week.

the game deserves a 9.0. It was really fun just messing around in the game. Omg, get all the cheats programmed into niko's phone. I don't know why Saints Row 2 didn't have saveable cheats, a major oversight imo. Anyway, like all the great GTAs, cheating turns you into a giggling imp. I was supposed to meet a contact with Roman downtown, so I summon a helicopter, we get in, fly off, then I jump out mid conversation and watch him crash into the ocean as I fall to my death. Summon boats on land and they don't appear on the curb but right in front of you, meaning you can crush pedestrians and cars, or get in a cab as a customer and annoy the cabbie to no end. The realistic graphics and physics only enhance the appeal of being a total asss. The darker and more twistedly creative you are the betterGunSmith1_basic

I'll admit, the most fun I've had while playing is when I had my freind and my brother in the basement and we just messed around in the helicopter. We'd spawn a helicopter, fly up, hit a building, and while it flaws, put in the health cheat to fix it. Very fun, but its sad that that's the most fun I've had so far.

GTA IV and Uncharted 2 are the most overrated games like ever!

BioShockOwnz

I'd say that your doing that because you know I'm a huge Uncharted fanboy, but I didn't think I was that well know here in SW.... But if you are tell me, I like feeling good about myself. If not, how DARE you shame Uncharted! (I'm obsessed, sorry!)

EDIT: Yeah, you were sarcastic, MAN!

So a little bit after Christmas, I finally decided to pick up GTA4. With a 98 metacritic average and the popularity it acheived, I was expecting huge things. I have come to the conclusion that, no matter how much I didn't care for Gears or Halo, this is the most overrated game I have ever played. Its VERY repetitive and it is very frustrating when you die in a mission. Having to both start over and know you got killed usually in a pretty cheap fasion (crash your bike anyone). Your supposed "freinds" are annoying idiots who do drugs all the time. I like Niko, and I liked Michelle. Roman and that black guy that just got out of jail are OK too. Other than that, I just don't like these guys. They kill, steal, everything, and you get involved in it just for some revenge scheme and the money. I wasn't expecting much but when everyone tells me how great a character Niko is and rivals that of Nathan Drake in terms of how likeable he is, well I would expect him to be a little less of an ass. So story: meh, its good, not great, I can't stand most of the characters. Gameplay: driving and shooting is fun, but gets old. Graphics: I don't know why but shadows practically make my character disappear. I dread the night time because I'm practically invisible.

Although I think a lot of a game's score is based off hype, I didn't think it would be this bad. GTA does a huge ammount of things with the internet cafe, the side missions and relationships you must maintain. There is A LOT in the game. HOWEVER, what good is it if the core mechanics are missing. Missions are repetitive and the story makes me want to kill the people that I don't like (I was thrilled when I got to kill Derrik!) but the game won't let me. The cops can be frustrating to run from and the stupid "sixaxis tutorial" blocks the cheats section on my phone. I'm on my way to pick up Brucie when suddenly I teleport to the airport to learn how to reload without pressing buttons. Then, when I go to my phone to quit, the game asks me if I'm sure I want to quit. That is like a slap in the face! I know it sounds like a minor complaint but you have no idea how many times this has happened to me. The jump button also throws me where my character is looking and not where I push the analogue stick. I've jumped off too many buildings screwing this up!

Its not all bad though. I am very impressed by what the game has done. Graphically, it looks great for the size of the world. I can't help but wonder why inFamous didn't look half as pretty. The cover system is good too. Being able to stick to anything in the environment is a great improvement over previous iterations. I mean, its not perfect, but it gets the job done.

The game does so much, and it does so much so well, but the game tries to be a story focused open world game, and that is its biggest problem. I know I'm one of few that didn't find the story to be "fantastic" but the repetitiveness of the gameplay and how frustrating dying was, it just wasn't fun.

I'd like to believe reviewers base their reviews on merit. However, its also based on hype, as we all know. Well, in the case of GTA, I feel like they grade the developers on how well they've done. Yes the checkpoint system is flawed and the graphics can make your character disappear in the darkness, but the the game has its own internet! Surely that counts for something!

I guess I could have made that a little shorter but my point is, base a game on what it really is. What the game tries to be. GTA does so much your always discovering new things (abandoning a car with a hooker in it and sending it into the river.) but what it tries to be primarily is an open world action game with a long and story driven plot. In that regard, it has failed. I have never felt inclined to put in the game for the story or the gameplay or even have a great time. I put it in just hoping it gets better. My freind says I'm 80% through. If that's the case I don't have a lot of hope for this title. I'll be honest, if I'm not grading the developers, the game is an 8. Thats it. The story is good, the gameplay is repetitive, the characters are annoying, and the stupid sixaxis tutorial wants to make me shoot myself in the foot! It isn't remotely perfect an I wouldn't give it a good score because of how it tries to impress us. Its not an awful game, its just not a great game either. I would think that a game with a 98% metacritic average would be a little better.

Sales don't matter, even still, I'd like to see some of my freinds by a PS3 casually like they do 360s and Wiis. I'd like it to be like the PS2, where people bought it even if they've never played a videogame. That won't happen, but if it even got close, that would be great.

Who do you think is the most likeable character this gen?

For me, it comes down to Niko Bellic, Nathan Drake, and Wrex :P

SilverChimera

I haven't finished GTA4 yet but I always couldn't stand that Niko would kill all these innocent people because he wanted $5000. Drake does it to, but they don't bring it up or hide it. It also feels like he NEEDS to do it, where as Niko just does it. He is still really likable though, I don't know why.

I have a hard time choosing between Elena and Nathan Drake, they are both great characters. But, I'm an Uncharted fanboy. Oh well.

Metal Gear Solid 4, inFAMOUS, Ratchet & Clank

metalgear-solid

Couldn't have said it better myself. Unless I added Uncharted. BAM WIN. Great games.

I'm a very single player oriented guy. I have played alot of Uncharted online and recently moved to Borderlands but Single player has always been more important to me.
