So a little bit after Christmas, I finally decided to pick up GTA4. With a 98 metacritic average and the popularity it acheived, I was expecting huge things. I have come to the conclusion that, no matter how much I didn't care for Gears or Halo, this is the most overrated game I have ever played. Its VERY repetitive and it is very frustrating when you die in a mission. Having to both start over and know you got killed usually in a pretty cheap fasion (crash your bike anyone). Your supposed "freinds" are annoying idiots who do drugs all the time. I like Niko, and I liked Michelle. Roman and that black guy that just got out of jail are OK too. Other than that, I just don't like these guys. They kill, steal, everything, and you get involved in it just for some revenge scheme and the money. I wasn't expecting much but when everyone tells me how great a character Niko is and rivals that of Nathan Drake in terms of how likeable he is, well I would expect him to be a little less of an ass. So story: meh, its good, not great, I can't stand most of the characters. Gameplay: driving and shooting is fun, but gets old. Graphics: I don't know why but shadows practically make my character disappear. I dread the night time because I'm practically invisible.
Although I think a lot of a game's score is based off hype, I didn't think it would be this bad. GTA does a huge ammount of things with the internet cafe, the side missions and relationships you must maintain. There is A LOT in the game. HOWEVER, what good is it if the core mechanics are missing. Missions are repetitive and the story makes me want to kill the people that I don't like (I was thrilled when I got to kill Derrik!) but the game won't let me. The cops can be frustrating to run from and the stupid "sixaxis tutorial" blocks the cheats section on my phone. I'm on my way to pick up Brucie when suddenly I teleport to the airport to learn how to reload without pressing buttons. Then, when I go to my phone to quit, the game asks me if I'm sure I want to quit. That is like a slap in the face! I know it sounds like a minor complaint but you have no idea how many times this has happened to me. The jump button also throws me where my character is looking and not where I push the analogue stick. I've jumped off too many buildings screwing this up!
Its not all bad though. I am very impressed by what the game has done. Graphically, it looks great for the size of the world. I can't help but wonder why inFamous didn't look half as pretty. The cover system is good too. Being able to stick to anything in the environment is a great improvement over previous iterations. I mean, its not perfect, but it gets the job done.
The game does so much, and it does so much so well, but the game tries to be a story focused open world game, and that is its biggest problem. I know I'm one of few that didn't find the story to be "fantastic" but the repetitiveness of the gameplay and how frustrating dying was, it just wasn't fun.
I'd like to believe reviewers base their reviews on merit. However, its also based on hype, as we all know. Well, in the case of GTA, I feel like they grade the developers on how well they've done. Yes the checkpoint system is flawed and the graphics can make your character disappear in the darkness, but the the game has its own internet! Surely that counts for something!
I guess I could have made that a little shorter but my point is, base a game on what it really is. What the game tries to be. GTA does so much your always discovering new things (abandoning a car with a hooker in it and sending it into the river.) but what it tries to be primarily is an open world action game with a long and story driven plot. In that regard, it has failed. I have never felt inclined to put in the game for the story or the gameplay or even have a great time. I put it in just hoping it gets better. My freind says I'm 80% through. If that's the case I don't have a lot of hope for this title. I'll be honest, if I'm not grading the developers, the game is an 8. Thats it. The story is good, the gameplay is repetitive, the characters are annoying, and the stupid sixaxis tutorial wants to make me shoot myself in the foot! It isn't remotely perfect an I wouldn't give it a good score because of how it tries to impress us. Its not an awful game, its just not a great game either. I would think that a game with a 98% metacritic average would be a little better.
