*looks for Valve stock ticker*

*doesn't have one*

Damn.

flipin_jackass

Which is one reason they are a superior game maker. Public companies are pressured to make business decisions focused on short term effects on financial statements. Those decisions tend to be bad for customers (and employees) and ultimately bad for the company. Valve, being private, doesn't face the same pressures from stockholders who don't understand or care about their business.

Hopefully these comments are "let's kiss EA's butt publicly so they keep distributing our games while we make our real money selling through Steam" and are not honestly "we are willing to sell out" overtures.

magazines, especially the big ones, frequently announce games, its pretty common

cobrax75

Yes, and when they have a major news item like that they put it in every edition and they put it on their website and it's not just a vague blurb on the cover. And when Rockstar decides to release that information they post it on their own website. And when one magazine puts an actual scoop out other magazines and internet site (like Gamespot) call their contacts at Rockstar and have follow up articles running within hours. That image is weeks old.

There's another thread on this a bit down and someone posted an email exchange with a PC Gamer editor who admits that while everyone knows eventually GTA4 will be on PC that cover blurb was not based on any information from Rockstar. That post could be a lie. You have to decide for yourself which makes sense and which doesn't.

3. Valve is quickly becoming the dominant player in digital distribution and game based social networking.

The laugh out loud bs line in this article: "We're not focused on how we compete with Steam."

Yeah. Cause this is the way Rockstar would announce it. Give permission for PC Gamer - Malaysia to put a vague announcement on its cover but not give them an actual quote to use in the magazine.

Reminds me of how they announced Vice City for PC in the personal ads in Seattle Weekly: "SWM seeks SWF for late night clubbing and Sun. crossword puzzles. BTW GTA:VC for PC soon!"

There used to be premium and low end monitor makers back in the days of CRTs, but the LCD market has changed things. LCD monitors are treated as commodities by the market (i.e. they are all interchangable, only price matters) which has driven formerly premium monitor makers to add cheap crap models to their product lines.

Bottom line you can't just say it's "XYZ Manufacturer" so its a good product. You really have to check reviews of specific models to know which are good and which are bad.

Early LCDs biggest challenge for gamers was refresh rate. That's a hurdle that has long been overcome. The refresh rate on almost any monitor today is plenty fast for gaming. TN Panel technology has gotten response times into 2ms territory and made LCD monitors really cheap. At the same time TN Panels have poor color consistancy and poor backlighting. So if you're just gaming they are great deals, but if you have other uses for your computer that require a consistant image across the screen you need to find a better monitor.

BTW, Dell does not build their own monitors. They have other manufacturers put Dell casings on their monitors. For this reason there are cheap garbage Dell monitors, but there are also very nice (and well priced) Dell monitors.

From personal experience I recommend against the WoW trial when the game is now dirt cheap. The Trial is 10 days and has a bunch of restrictions on it to slow down RMT. You can't trade, you can't join a guild, there's restrictions on auction use, on mail. For $20 buy the game and try it out for 30 days, no Trial account limitations. Even if you cancel after a month $20 is a deal for 30 days entertainment.

Way better than Prey. Better story, better game world, wide open levels, fairly scary in places. Time spent will vary a lot based on whether you are the type to try an explore every nook and cranny or bee line to the main objectives. It doesn't have a ton of replayability. I did play it a second time, just cause I enjoyed it a lot, but it's pretty much the same experience over again. Despite the quest system it plays pretty linearly.

It's also a hard game, especially early with the weak weapons. I play most fps's on medium or hard difficulty settings. This one I ended up putting on easy (first time through).

It's not an RPG. There is no experience point system. Your characters base abilities never improve. You can equip different gear including various artifacts that improve your ability and/or survivability in various ways. You can switch out these artifacts whenever you want. You get loot off dead bodies which you can use or sell and buy different gear. It is not an RPG, it's still a good fun game.
