New Podcast Episode! GGL014 - Grailwolf's Geek Life Season 2

A New Season Dawns

(As always, you can find the audio file for this episode at grailwolf.com. You can either download the audio directly, or subscribe through iTunes or your favorite podcatcher. )

Welcome back again, wolfpack! This is the introduction to the second season of Grailwolf's Geek Life. Primarily this episode is just an explanation of how things are going to work for the next couple weeks.
The new TV season starts on Monday, 09/24, and we'll be producing a whole string of mini-episodes to discuss all the new genre programming. Keep an eye out for those starting in the next couple days.

It's Okay to Love Best Buy Again! Yippee!!

Okay, all my previous ranting still holds. Best Buy really needs to get their system up to 21st Century standards. There is no excuse for the fact that their various departments don't talk to one another, nor for the many hoops that one has to jump through to get them to honor their service plans.

That said, their employees are, occasionally, awesome.

One of the many, many people I spoke to during this ordeal was an employee named Larry who worked in the Magnolia Home Theater department of the Tyson's Corner Best Buy. He seemed to take a personal interest in my situation and spent most of Tuesday afternoon running from department to department, talking to managers, and calling customer service to help me resolve it. I finally brought the TV in myself (it's ridiculously expensive to have them pick it up) and Larry got everything coordinated for me, led me right to the people I needed to talk to, and we got everything done in about an hour. I now am the proud owner of a Samsung 32" Flat-Panel LCD HDTV (LNT-3253H ) and I could not be happier. Gods, this TV is a thing of beauty. :)

There is just not that much that I can do to repay this sort of dedication (Best Buy employees don't get comission) so I can just say that this guy gets my personal endorsement. If you happen to live in the Northern Virginia area, talk to Larry in the Tyson's Best Buy if you plan on buying any home theater equipment. He'll steer you right.

As you can probably tell by the fact that it took me a week to blog about it, I'm still insanely busy with all the other things mentioned in the previous blog. So if I don't reply to personal PMs, it's just because I'm so bogged down taking care of all my other responsibilities.

I do still intend to blog about the wedding and honeymoon, but that's going to have to be another time. Take care, all!

My Love/Hate Relationship With Best Buy

Greetings, all! Sorry I've been quiet for so long. Mainly I've been trying to catch up with everything that I had to let slide during the wedding and honeymoon. Lots of stuff at work, here on the site, and around the house.

Most recently, I've been banging my head against the wall that is Best Buy. Now, don't get me wrong, I love the store. I spend many hours there as often as possible. But this is my first experience in trying to get a major appliance repaired there, and it has been simply maddening.

Around April or May of 2005 a friend sold me his relatively new TV (purchased in June of '04) because he wanted to upgrade. This TV is a monster. 30" widescreen HD CRT and it weighs at least 100 lbs. My friend was going to move soon, so he wanted to have a flat panel TV that wouldn't kill him when he tried to move it. So I bought the TV and he signed his 4 Year service plan over to me at the same time. We read every letter of the service plan, and the only thing that said anything about how to transfer ownership was a space for the name of the new owner and the signature of the original owner, so he signed it and we figured we were set.

Then I started having problems with the HD signal. This was pretty soon (a couple months later, maybe July), but I just called the in-home service department, explained about the transferred service plan, and everything was fine. The problem was that every time I had someone look at it they failed to call me back. I'd call again in a few weeks and they'd send a new person who had to see the problem for themselves. They'd look at the TV, go away, and never call back. This went on for about two years. Finally someone decided that it was the picture tube. Best Buy decided that would be too expensive to fix, so they offered to replace the TV on 8/02.

Now I've spent almost two weeks calling stores and the corporate office every day (several times a day) trying to figure out what is going on. In short, the people who have to approve the replacement all agree that the approval is legitimate, but no one at any store or any other location can find it despite the fact that it has been sent to them several times.

The only thing I can figure is that there is some problem because of the transfer of ownership. I had someone check, and sure enough it is still in the name of the original owner (despite the fact that I've been using the service plan to have the TV fixed for two years). Apparently I was supposed to fax the signed plan in to them (to a number that is not on the plan itself) or send a photocopy (to an address that is on the plan, but only labelled "Cancellations"). And again, they certainly don't go to any great lengths to bring attention to this. I mean, like actually telling anybody or anything.

These guys need to go into advertising.

Anyway, I'm trying to deal with this, fix my sister's computer (I think that's for another blog), start cleaning out my house so that it can be put on the market, take care of a sudden infestation of fruit flies, go through a backlog of laundry that is truly awe-inspiring, test for toxic mold spores in the house (yipee!), arrange to take care of a friend's house while they're out of town, and try to find some time in there to sleep. Oh yeah, and there's this podcast thing... (I might actually get an episode out this week).

Once things settle down a bit I'll try to blog about the wedding and honeymoon. If everything works out as intended, you might even be able to hear the service itself.

But that's for another time. Hope you all are well and perhaps a little less busy than I (or, at least, a little better able to manage your time). :)

Hurdy gur,

-Marc

Wedding day!

No time, but I wanted to jump on to say that today is the day. Getting last-minute stuff ready and then heading out for the big adventure. Sorry I've been too busy to deal with my editor queue or answer all the messages of congratulations. Thanks to you all, and I'll be back in a day or two.

Goin' To The Chapel

As many of you know, the lovely lady singingypsygrrl and I will be getting married on July 7th. This means that I will be MIA for large chunks of July. Obviously, I will not be around on 7/7/07, and for about two weeks after the wedding (7/8-7/23) we'll be entertaining out of town guests and taking our honeymoon, so I'll only be on when I can. I ask that people please try to be patient with submissions, and to take my absense into consideration when submitting to my guides.

If you should need anything during that time, please do not hesitate to contact any of the other moderators (Gislef, Villafan, GeorgeFergus, or angelandspike) for forum and moderation issues, or the staff members (Danmod, Jaxiecracks, or Emaldalani) for anything else. If you aren't sure whether to contact moderators or staff, try a mod first. You can find links to all of them on the main forum page.

Meanwhile, you should see at least one podcast coming soon, possibly two, and keep an eye on this space in late July/early August because if all goes well then we'll be putting out a special episode of Grailwolf's Geek Life: "Grailwolf's Geek Wedding." Yes, we'll be recording much of the wedding and the honeymoon (not those parts... get your minds out of the gutter) and we'll be podcasting the event (which, I believe, is a first). Much depends, though, on the recording equipment working and the resulting audio being at least a little interesting, so keep your eyes peeled... Or your ears... Whatever.

Life Deserves a Soundtrack

Okay, this is so totally not original. It's also bad timing because I recently took a lot of my music off my iPod to make room for some videos and I haven't gotten around to putting it back. And even at the best of times I don't have anywhere near all of my music sitting on this thing. However, I do have a heck of a lot more on here than it seems like from the list below. Ever have one of those days when the iPod's shuffle play feature just decides to like three or four artists and won't seem to play anything else?
My Soundtrack You are supposed to put your iPOD, media player, CD player, or whatever you have on shuffle. Whatever song is first you put for #1 and then so on. NO CHEATING! You have to put whatever song is next!. Opening Credits: Arrogant Worms - Jesus' Brother Bob Birth: The Shins - New Slang Waking Up: They Might Be Giants - The Guitar (The Lion Sleeps Tonight) First Day At School: Jonathan Coulton - You Could Be Her Falling Asleep: Tori Amos - Doughnut Song Puberty: Keane - Can't Stop Now First Kiss: Depeche Mode - New Dress Falling In Love: Lee Holdridge & Ron Perlman - Quest/Letters to a Young Poet "First Time" Love Scene: Depeche Mode - Lie To Me Fight Song: Luka Bloom - Bad (cover of the U2 song) Break Up Song: Depeche Mode - Halo Broken Heart: Howard Jones - Everlasting Love Prom: Glass Tiger - Someday Graduation: Naked Eyes - Always Something There To Remind Me Life: Keane - Put it Behind You First Job: They Might Be Giants - Minimum Wage (I kid you not!!!) Mental Breakdown: Freedy Johnston - Cold Again Driving: Jonathan Coulton - I'm Your Moon Flashback: Jonathan Coulton - W's Duty Getting Back Together: Howard Jones - Conditioning Engagement: Live - Brothers Unaware Wedding: Howard Jones - Don't Always Look At The Rain Honeymoon: Depeche Mode - If You Want Birth of Child: Oingo Boingo - Weird Science Final Battle: The Mission (UK) - Hungry Like the Hunter Lesson Learned: Jim McCann - Raglan Road Death Scene: The Like - Too Late Funeral Song: Freedy Johnston - Bad Reputation End Credits: Depeche Mode - The Dead of Night Oh, I should point out that while I didn't cheat per se, I did skip over some non-music tracks that came up (mainly recorded books, comedy CDs, and podcasts).

The Moderation Process - A Reminder About How It Works

Despite what it says at the top of the blog, this entry is me speaking as a moderator. Sort of. Only "sort of" because this information has been repeated in the forums many times, and really should be common knowledge by now. However, I keep seeing people who are confused by the process, so I thought it was time for another reminder of how things work. Every Moderation is a Warning This should be a no-brainer because every moderation notice states this explicitly, but a lot of people seem to miss this part. In short, if you get a moderation because of censor bypassing, please consider that a warning that you may be suspended and/or banned if you continue to censor bypass. It's really that simple. If you are not sure why you got the moderation, there are two things you can do. The first is to go read the Terms of Service. To do this, go to the "TV.com General User Support" forum and there you'll find the "Help Center" thread which contains a lot of helpful information including the TOS. From this blog entry you can also just click here. The TOS description should tell you what the information on your moderation PM means. If you have any further questions, though, you can always ask for clarification in the "About the Forums - Ask the Mods" forum. You can also PM a moderator, but we are not all on at the same time, so you may have to wait a while if you go this route. How Many Warnings Do I Get? I'm not going to answer this one directly because it depends on a number of factors, primarily how severe the offense is and to a lesser extent how reasonable the poster is. Some severe violations (spam advertising or extreme vulgarity, for example) may get you banned immediately. Generally, though, you will get several warnings. If you continue to violate the TOS after all these warnings, you will be suspended for a few days. If you keep it up after this cool-down period, then after just a few more warnings you will almost certainly be banned. I Got Suspended/Banned for... Almost any time you hear someone say that they were suspended or banned for some minor offense, remember that they are wrong. That may have been the final straw, but it isn't the reason they were penalized. In reality they were suspended or banned because they ignored all the other warnings that they got up to that point. Remember that moderations add up, and even if they are all for "minor" offenses, you will still get a suspension (or ban) if you collect enough of them. The Mods Are Picking On Me!! No. We're not. I can honestly say that we are all way too busy to single out any user and go after them 24/7. What is more likely is that someone reported a post (or a mod found the post on their own) and that post was in a thread full of your posts, many of which violated the TOS. Another possibility is that one or more users reported a lot of your posts within a short period of time. If we get a report we will look into it, and if the reported post violated the TOS (even if you think that particular rule is unjust or "stupid") then we will moderate it. We don't do this because we want to (trust me, we'd all rather be dealing with our own guides or hanging out on the forum) we do it because we have promised to uphold the rules of TV.com. If you dislike any of those rules, then post (politely) in the forums suggesting that the rule be changed. The staff really do listen to the ideas of the users, and if you make a good case for changing a rule, I am sure that they would consider it. If you just decide that a rule is stupid and you ignore it, then I guarantee that you will be moderated. It's a bit like a speed limit that is far too low. You can ignore it, but you'll definitely get a ticket, or you can contact your local officials and try to get it changed. It's your choice. In Summary So, to sum up: If you violate the TOS you will get a moderation. This is a warning, not really a punishment. If you ignore several moderations then you will be suspended. If you keep ignoring them after that, then you will be banned. If you are confused about something, look it up. If you are still confused, then ask. If you think a rule or a moderation is unjust, talk about it, don't ignore it. That's really all there is to it. I think I speak for all the moderators when I say that I really hate having to give out moderations and suspensions (mods do not ban users, we only point out problem users to staff and they make the decision). This system of warnings should let users know when they are doing something wrong so that they can stop before they get a suspension or ban, but again and again I see otherwise intelligent users repeat the same patterns over and over until they have to be kicked off the site. There is literally no reason that this has to happen. If you are starting this sort of pattern, please look at the TOS and the other resources in our user help forums. And if you see anyone engaging in this sort of behavior, I urge you to explain the situation to them or even send them to this blog. The idea is not to punish anyone, just to make these forums into a place in which everyone is comfortable and can have fun. If you read the TOS you'll see that the rules really just boil down to one idea: Be polite and treat people with courtesy. As long as you do that, you won't go too far wrong.

Back from Balticon!

My sincerest apologies, I forgot to post here that I would be gone over the weekend. Anyone who sent me PMs or submissions, I'm sorry for the wait and I'll be getting to them shortly.  PMs may take a bit longer, as I seem to be having a problem using that system from work.

At any rate, I'll be posting about Balticon in more depth as soon as I have some time. Meanwhile let me just say: Best. Con. Ever.

Hope all is well with everyone.

New Podcast: GGL Tribute to Joe Murphy

olAs always, you can download Grailwolf's Geek Life from grailwolf.com

Grailwolf's Geek Life Tribute to Joe Murphy

Joseph Murphy
1972 - 2007

There will be no regular episode of Grailwolf's Geek Life this week. Instead, I ask you to join me in marking the passing of a wonderful and warm human being. This feed contains a brief intro for the regular listeners of the GGL, a promo for the Joe Murphy Memorial Fund, and then the entire Joe Murphy Tribute produced by Evo Terra, Michael R. Mennenga, Mur Lafferty, and the rest of the Farpoint Media family. Many thanks to Mur for organizing this amazing tribute, and to Evo Terra for granting me permission to include it in my feed.

Show links:

  1. The Joe Murphy Memorial Fund has been established to defray some of the costs of Joe's care and the expenses incurred by his family. The remainder will be going to Hospice and to research into leiomyosarcoma carcinoma.
  2. For another touching tribute to Joe, check out Jack Mangan's Deadpan Podcast, Episode #53. While you're there, check out the rest of the episodes too. Jack is a great guy and a very funny podcaster. At least, under normal circumstances.
  3. The music for the Memorial Fund promo was provided by the funny and talented George Hrab. It was amazing of him to give his work so freely, and I hope that he gets some song downloads out of it, at the very least.
  4. Check out this page of tributes to Joe. I especially love the image of Joe and Cap.

DISCLAIMER: I promised Evo that I would not alter the tribute in any way, so I left the Farpoint I.D. intact at the beginning and end. Please be aware that I am not affiliated with Farpoint Media and that they are in no way responsible for any of the content which I produced in this feed.

There will be another regular episode of the GGL very soon, so keep checking back. Meanwhile, I urge you to download this file and get to know Joe.
