People usually recommend that you play vanilla first, but since OL is actually what the game was supposed to be in the first place... I'd say just go for it. There's no difference in story or missions. Just get this, it includes some visual improvements, especially to the already great textures.
Best place for stalker SoC and Clear Sky is Stalker Files at filefront. There isn't any real must have mods yet, other than less enemy grenades and the terrain pack which has really really nice texture replacements.
