I should add: "When it's fair." to the difficulty statement. If it's challenging because it requires skill, great. If it's challenging because AI can see through walls, head shot from miles away through smoke etc, general unfairness -- that's not welcomed.
@SpearM64 True but that is precisely the point. They did fanservice by changing the flashlight, but the original decision to have the flashlight the way it was, was an important one. It made the player ride on a knifes edge of panic and terror; the game went so far as to say play it in the dark -- but also came with a warning for people with heart conditions. If you can always see what's going on, the terror factor and therefore atmosphere and immersion are greatly diminished. It's not going to ruin the game necessarily, but it does change it. Some people prefer it the new way, I will try it, but I feel I will prefer it in the original version.
I'm looking forward to this, although I dislike the idea of the flashlight at all times idea. A huge part of Doom 3's atmosphere was due to the prioritization you had to make between light and firepower. The expansion iirc changed that, but the original should at least have the option to play the original way. The designers didn't do that by accident (the flashlight method), it was a question that had to be discussed.
@raazter94 @residude I would tend to agree to an extent, I still prefer the helicopters in BF2. But I much prefer the physics, and sniping in BF3 (PC).
@residude It doesn't look next-gen on PS3 precisely because it isn't. They made the engine scalable so it would run on older hardware.
They didn't ruin anything in BF3, they continued the multi-player from Battlefield 2. Bad Company was a spinoff, and has always been different. Play BC3 when it comes out, if that's what you enjoy.
The scorpion mod actually has a real use, as an archer enemies you kill are far away, and you have to walk over to loot them. This brings the loot to you.
Despite this review I still want to play it. The extreme realism talks to me. Bugs can get fixed, and it may be entire crud, but it still deserves a chance (when it's cheap).
