I have, in the past weeks, gone on a free MMO spree. I have downloaded, and played many many free MMOs in the past few weeks. Some of the most notable games have been Knight Online, Last Chaos, Dungeon Runners, BOTS, Drift City, and Puzzle Pirates. I am not going to review each game in-depth, but I will write up a little bit about each one.
Knight Online
I played this for a while with a few friends. It is a very cool MMO, with some cool features, and armor. However, a lot of quests past the newbie zone become repetitious, and force you to spend long amounts of time killing enemies for their drops, so that you can turn it in, get your reward, and start over again with a similar quest. It is a fun game, and very much worth a try, however. The weapons, and armor, as well as some other drops go by the fun "(Item) +(number)" formula, making it fun to collect some of those elusive +9 items.
Last Chaos
This is a great free game, with many new additions to the world of MMOs. Many of the quests are fun to do, and at certain levels you will unlock "Personalized Dungeons", where you can go along at your own pace in a personal dungeon, just as the name suggests. The world is a sprawling green world. Further into the game you can explore some other places including a Desert. There are many, many events that go on each day, such as Sunday Tea, where you get extra skill points, per kill. The graphics aren't shabby for a free MMO, either. The only problem is that, even though there seems like there is a lot to do, there are some levels where you have to grind to get to the next level so you can unlock some new quests, or a new dungeon. This is the only downside I could find, and this is worth a try to anyone who enjoys playing a free game with great gameplay.
Dungeon Runners
Dungeon Runners is a fun game, with a good sense of humor at certain points. The action is very exciting, and there are many quests to do. The loot is very fun to collect. The bosses, sometimes drop epic items, and are usually followed by chests of loot. The downside is you cant use epic or higher items, and in some cases some other items, unless you pay real life money to sign up as a "member". I realize that this is the kind of thing that pays for these free games, but variety past level 15 is almost nothing. The dungeons become repetitive, a new enemy becomes so rare that you get excited at the slightest idea of a new one, and it becomes very hard to level up. This game is worth a try, but chances are it wont last very long.
BOTS
BOTS is an interesting twist on the average MMO. It is more like an average online game with player made servers, on a main server. The gameplay consists of z, x, c, v, and the arrow keys. You bust, and punch through the levels until you meet up with the boss, and knock his block off. BOTS is a great game, and although most games are a one on one fight to the death this game is a lighter approach where the enemies are robot viruses, that you have to break. I dont have much bad stuff to say about this game, except that it seems a bit repetitive at points.
Drift City
This is an interesting game, where instead of playing as a 'Level 53 Barbarian Warlord' you play as a car. Yes, as car. You drive for the government in pursuit of HUVs (Hi-Tech Unmanned Vehicle). You also do missions for the common-folk, from driving doughnuts from this place to that place,in less than a certain amount of time, to picking up injured people and delivering them from this place to the hospital. Along the way you discover the origins of the mysterious HUVs, and work your way through the streets, in increasingly better cars. Which brings me to the cars in the game. The cars are semi cel-shaded. This is interesting while you are driving down the wrong side of the road, at 150 miles per hour. The downside is that even though the cars are expensive, you need a coupon to buy it. Coupons are very hard to come by on certain cars. I recently had to catch all the HUVs in 100 pursuits so I could pay 80k (out of the 180k I had) for a car. The car was very much worth it, but it is a bit tedious. The game is still in closed beta state, and at the time I write this, you can only progress about 50% through the game. You can find this game at ijji.com. (I put this because at the time it is not listed in GameSpots search engine.) This game is cirrently inactive, as the 2nd Closed beta comes to an end.
Puzzle Pirates
Arr, this is an odd game, indeed. It is, like some of the other games I have listed here, not the average MMO. It is a 2-D world where you can group up with a crew of shashbucklin' scurvy dogs, to plunder the poor blokes who pass by your vessel. However, it is not a hack n' slash like you would expect from pirates, but instead you play puzzles, such as a piriateified (I dont know if that is a word or not) tetris, and lights-out to plunder the enemy's loot. Though it sounds like a lost cause, it is actually very fun. It is kind of confusing to a newbie, but it is worth trying.
I hope someone is actually reading this, because it took me quite a while to type out. :P
