I just dont like the shadow mapping technique dev's using now, the shadows will pop in from low to high res in ur face/jitter see pixelated parts they seem very glitchy.

Doom 3 - Unified Lighting and Shadowing

Anyone remember people complaining doom3's shadows are too sharp edged?

Well here's a shadow map without using smoothies on the edge.

A stock/standard stencil shadow with no smoothies looks better than a stock/shadow map without smoothies.

Are developers stupid or something?

How can you possibly say crysis has better shadows than doom3? LOL

Brainkiller05

Please stop, you must really find something better to do. EVEN IF Doom 3 had better shadows than Crysis that doesn't mean ****, so what? it has better shadows, fantastic... but Crysis has 1000 things better than Doom 3.

stencil display polygon perfect, shadow maps dont no way crysis's can be better.

Oh no, he's back.

Please don't hijack the thread with Doom 3 post again. You'll just serve to annoy everyone. I mean, is that your thing or something?

without crytek dev's sampling using smoothies on the edges of the shadow maps would of looked like hell/pixelated.

you can still see the smoothies around the edge of the shadow, like tiny/pixels around edges of shadows.

Crysis does have the best shadow map work i seen though, they did some sampling like hell to smooth out the jagged ass edges shadow maps have, you can still see em every once and awhile/jitter though.

shadow maps are good for outdoor games, since not that intensive, but they crappy for indoor.

how come john carmack used stencil over shadow maps? because he knows they are overall better.

engines which use shadow maps piss me off none have i seen render dark rooms properly.

When look at crysis shadows or killzone2, they jitter/artifact one of common things of shadow maps and poping from low/high res infront of ur face.

shadow maps are stored in the texture it's basically prebaked shadows.

doom3 detroned crysis and killzone2.

stencil shadows are better than shadow maps, stencil shadows dont go from low res to high res/pop in ur face they retain shape at any distance.

f.e.a.r 2 engine is better, lol monolith didnt even make fear2 engine

See here's crysis shadow map pop in though crappy shadow maps

TheAnnihilation

 Ha ha ha ha! I knew you'd come!

shadows maps have terrible pixelation crysis/killzone2 uses smoothies on edges of shadows to give it soft look, but you can still seee jaggies artifacting lol.

shadow maps cannot do dark area's worth a crap, you can see see specular maps across the room.
