Metal isn't necessarily screaming. I listen to Japanese and German metal and there is hardly any screaming involved. Im not sure if it qualifies as "heavy metal" though...
People have been leaving even before this whole Jeff fiasco. I recently came back after about a two years absence even though I never thought I would so I bet some will probably come back.
