I think there have been FPS/RPG hybrids in the past... except they all sucked.

...COD4 is RPG-ish (doesn't suck)

...I think Planetside is like a MMORPGFPS, except it's not free (at least i think it's a MMORPGFPS, never played it lol)

There's always Huxley to look forward to.

Options for a gaming notebook are limited, The only real vid card options are already several generations older than current desktop technology. The best option now is probably something like an 8600GT.

I'm suprised nobody mentioned SLI in a notebook, because you can get 8800M GTX in SLI on a notebook...good luck finding an SLI notebook for less than 2500 though, lol.

...I'm assuming you won't try to play games on battery, because that's a good way to drain your battery in no time at all.

9800GTX is the closest card nVidia has in the radeon HD 4850 price range, and it's only really comparable if you overclock.

[QUOTE="iBP_Rickochet"]I have little doubt that a properly overclocked 9800GTX will completely smash the HD 4850. matrixian

Prove it. Be careful you might fry it.

Hmm... only benches I have archived of overclocked 9800GTXs are in triple-SLI, it wouldn't be fair to compare those against the HD4850 (only have benches in single and double crossfire mode). 9800GTX OC'd in single mode is kinda on my to-do list, but i'm not really sure when i'll get around to it.

Here's the 9800GTX Tri-SLI 3dmark Vantage score Without PhysX drivers.

The HD 4850 on the other hand... barely went anywhere...

matrixian

No need to overclock it, at stock it performs better than the 9800GTX XXX edition, while being cheaper and consuming less power.

Well, the topic is about overclocking headroom and by association, overclocking performance. I have little doubt that a properly overclocked 9800GTX will completely smash the HD 4850.

4850 has crap for overclock potential. It runs hot and just plain doesnt overclock well, even with our high airflow setups.

For overclocking potential, I'd reccomend a 9800GTX or a GTX 260.

In Triple SLI (which usually has worse overclocking than single cards), we got the 9800GTX to 850mhz+ core clock (from 675 stock). The Triple SLI GTX 260s went from 576 stock (tho our EVGA cards came clocked at 602 stock for some reason) to 768mhz, and we were only limited by the shader clock at that point.

The HD 4850 on the other hand... barely went anywhere...

Mediocre case... it's ok, I guess...but i really like the NZXT Tempest and I can't resist reccomending it to everyone :P

I'd also reccomend going with an E8400 dual-core over that CPU. Higher-clocked dual cores of the same architecture perform better in games than quad cores. If you really want quad-core tho... try to get a Q9450 or better (Yorkfield architecture has significant performance benefits).

The 4850 is probably the best video card for your money right now, though I feel that a 9800GTX overclocked is about on par...

Actually, it doesn't really sound like an overheating issue... not with the CPU or vid cards at least...

Usually when the CPU overheats the mobo throttles it down and starts beeping (on most mobos, unless you turned off thermal throttling). Either that, or the computer freezes up or blue screens rather than shutting off.

When a vid card overheats it usually artifacts or crashes, in which case your video either freezes for extended periods of time or you get booted to the windows desktop with a message that your video drivers have stopped working.

It sounds like a PSU problem to me.
