some games require vista, many do not - w98 was supported for years after xp launched, while the situation is a little different here, i bet xp will still have good support for a great deal of games for quite a while yet, i mean, it's in the best interests of publishers and developers to hit the largest possible audience, and 90+% of the windows pc gaming community uses xp right now - and that number probably won't drop below 75% this year... who is going to limit their market to 25% of the community? some, sure, but not many...
as for your machine's specs - it's okay, but it's not high-end futureproofed... staying on the speartip is expensive, but just ask yourself - do you have a pc to play great pc games, or to play great looking pc games? which is more important to you? budget wisely and upgrade smartly and you can have a great pc that's high on performance and low on cost
as for running cod4 and halo 2, aside from needing vista for halo 2 (dunno on cod4?), that pc will have no problems running halo 2 at all, and probably little problem running cod4 on at least a high medium setting, i would think
