Just to make 100% sure, did you patch up to the official 1.2 patch before installing the latest unofficial patch (I found that was required for me to have a resolution other than 4:3).
For peformance I would reccomend defragging after installing the game and patches (a third party defrager such as Diskeeper helps the most). Other than that the game is not very well optimised and will have suffer from bad framerates at times on most systems (this will become exceptionally appearent on higher resolutions). The game dosen't run that much better for me on my 8800gtx and amd 4800x2 than it did on my Athlon 3500 and X850.

Yes i realise it says "Powered by Unreal Technology" but in the back of the R6 vegas manual it only gives copyright for unreal engine 2.
Also when i purchased the game i was having really bad fps problems ( i tried the Utgame.exe (UT3) switch for sli) but my biggest fps increase came from playing with the unreal 2 settings.
Also ive never heard any mention from Ubi that the game was running in Unreal engine 3

if Vegas ran on Unreal engine 2 you wouldn't see better graphics than UT2004 or Americas Army
Splinter cell Double Agent uses a modified Unreal Engine 2.5 and it looks far better than UT2004. Vegas uses UE 2.5 with elements from Unreal Engine 3 (such as deffered Lighting) so it is sort of an Unreal Engine 2.75. Bioshock I believe is doing the same thing except it is using a modified Tribes Vengence engine with elements of UE3.
