I wonder if this will end up being at all similar to Jiu-Jitsu, where Tony Jaa teams up with someone who is not a professional martial artist (Cage) to fight aliens, instead of mythical monsters. Now I want to watch both films back to back.
I would personally rather see them lean into the surreal aspects of Metal Gear along with the violence, meaning I'd rather see a lower budget Takashi Miike adaptation. Those are always interesting, at least.
The poster KarenGiy82, below, suggesting "hot-lovin conversations" is likely a bot, and their post is not relevant to discussion of theatrical releases debuting the same-day on HBO Max.
For your safety and the safety of those around you, I encourage you to not do so. Use VOD options or order the disc. Going out for non-essential reasons is a terrible idea, and part of the reason the pandemic has spread the way it has.
We will see. I expect it will remain permanent and major theatrical releases will also have a day one launch on the HBO Max service well beyond this year.
It's actually not too tough to envision, given the tradeoff of zero overhead beyond the actual production of the film. Theaters received a cut of ticket sales, and there were costs associated with distributing to theaters, etc. The VOD removes all that from the equation.
Naturally, it's probably "less profitable" than major theatrical releases, but the majority of films weren't those anyway. Big superhero films and Star Wars movies, perhaps, but people were migrating away from the traditional theater experience long before COVID hit.
