OK so I just got a new pair of OCZ System Elite 2GB DDR2 800 RAM - planning to give away my old RAM to a friend or relative.

I was working on some OC-ing during the afternoon, after a lot of trial and error, reboots and around 3 hours - I got my E2160 to 3.2GHz - which is 356mhz on a 9x multiplier.

However, the voltage supplied to the CPU is concerning me (the voltage was manually set, letting the BIOS handle it always produces problems) - here is a screenshot from CPU-Z:

It's using up to 1.42 volts of power?! Isn't that a bit overboard since Legion Hardware managed to get to 3.4ghz at around 1.4v only?

If I drop it a bit further down, just a little, Windows will not boot or resets all the time :S

Dunno - might be the CPU batch I got is a shoddy one, but is the Vcore too high?

Also, I think I'm getting an FSB wall at 370mhz, more volts (CPU, DDR and NB) supplied = no dice...

Any comments or opinions welcomed.

with overclocking, and any technology as a matter of fact, no piece of equipement is the same, even if they are from the same manufacturer and the same model, they are never the same. your equipement might be different to what Legion hardware used aswel, motherboards make up a big deal in overclocking aswel. cooling aswel, you would be able to get it further if you were using water cooling rather then air, or if you got a better cooler. then, i would say that a 3.2 overclock on your processor is a good overclock none the less.

with my new build, do you think its worth buying a 8600gts for example rather then the 8800gts then buy the 9800gts on its arrival then put the 8600gts in the third pci-e slot for physics?

Cathodes are just lights - as jamie stated.

Use them to make your case look fancy, or when you want to look inside (that's if you have a side window case)

Mounting is usually a piece of velcro attached to the case.

Not really necessary for the Antec 900 - isn't there enough LEDs inside it already?

TicTac8745

only the 3 l.e.d fans, they don't emmit that much light though. good enough, but if you want more light then you need some cathodes, and there really are horrible to fit in the antec nine hundred because the normal place for people installing cathodes is on the bottom of the case but there isnt enough space with the psu being at the bottom.

there are also sound reactive lights that you can get, i was thinking about getting some of them just because they would be cool lol

there just looking lights.

they dont do anything special. i have the antec 900 and i had 2 cathodes, unfortunatly i snaped them both yesterday rearranging them.

i put both mine at the top of the case. the antec nine hundred has lights already so its up to you, without them my case glows a deeper blue colour which is nice and i can see the green on my zalman 9700nt better without them at the top. i am currently undecided whether to get a new set or not atm. tehy connect to a molex power connector.

[QUOTE="LordEC911"]

[QUOTE="K_r_a_u_s_e_r"]ROFL, how am I flaming you? Disagreeing with you isn't flaming -- your logic that the P35 is an amazing overclocker means nothing as I've stated that the majority of other boards can overclock perfectly FINE. Alright, so you can get a few more MHz off the FSB, big deal... Assuming that you have proper cooling your max overclock will be 4.2 GHz instead of 4 again, will the average overclocker even ascend to or past 4 GHz? Probably NEVER, not only that but AGAIN, the majority is COOLER based.K_r_a_u_s_e_r

WTF?
How are you bringing the CPU cooler into this?

We are talking about the FSB, which has little to do with the CPU cooler.
Again, you are disagreeing with me for no reason and going against FACT.
Congrat-u-****ing-lations!

Edit- The RD600 was better then the 680i in the overclocking department and even that is below the level of the P35. Also I never said the P35 is an amazing overclocker, even though it is, it is just above par of the "original" C2D boards.

You're not getting it... Who cares if you can slightly tweak the FSB? More FSB = more heat from the CPU, the 680i and OTHER MOTHERBOARDS are already capable of reaching speeds beyond 4 GHz so WHO CARES what the P35 can do in terms of overclocking. I'm not disregarding what it can do in other departments, just base your "OMG THIS MOBO IS SO MUCH BETTER BECAUSE XXX" arguments on something other than overclocking.

See it this way...

My FSB right now is at 419 x 9(I can reach higher, just don't have the cooling) which equates to roughly 3771, already that's causing quite a bit of heat...
If I had the P35 and could reach the speeds of as you say 500 FSB x 9, that would equal 4500 MHz, causing an intense amount of heat on my CPU and would require a higher voltage core adjustment thus equating to a better CPU cooler.

I'm not trying to argue with you that the P35 is a terrible motherboard, I'm just trying to say that the P35 and the 680i can both make it fine from point A to B, but from B to C the P35 has a slight advantage, but not enough of an advantage to make me want to buy one if I ever plan a dual-SLi setup. Does that make any sense to you?

You can't overclock anything that far if your cooling is bad LordEC911, everyone knows that!

take your cpu cooler off your board and see how stable your p35 board is then!

am sure it will be fine, am sure it wont blow up or anything. it will still be in one piece, not 4!!

i recently changed my main hdd to a 40 gig from an 80 gig, twice as fast.

everyone buys these massive harddrives, i dont see the point, i like the smaller drives because they index better and alot more speedy then the ruddy great things. even better with the creation of raid0 because that increases preformance ever more. for my new rig i now have 3 * 160 gb western digital drives.

the difference between a 10000rpm and 7200rpm drive is not all that much, it will load slightly faster, but then you could just get twice as many 7200rpm hard drives of whatever gigabyte and then raid them and it will be miles faster.

i started building my pc a couple of months ago and i am too impatient to be waiting for the 9800 to be releasd, which is said to be november, but to be honest, its going to be over priced. i am going to wait till after christmas when its slightly cheaper and all the kinks have been worked out. then the 8800 can just be put on ebay or something.
