[QUOTE="nutcrackr"]Try adjusting the sound settings in game, lower quality for starters What is your sound chip, if you are running the latest sound drivers then try using older ones or just reinstalling.

How do I know what my sound chip is?

Well I think we pretty much established that it's a sound problem since the game freezes with sound and runs smoothly without it. But, just for fun, here's what I have:

Sigma Tel High Definition Audio CODEC
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
1 gig of RAM
1.83 GHz dual core Intel processors (two processors with 1.83 GHz each)
80 gig hard drive

My soundcard is a "Sigma Tel High Definition Audio CODEC".

My video card driver is updated.

The problem isn't my FPS. The games runs very smoothy up until it freezes.I have a gig of RAM, so I know its not that. My older desktop cannot be better than my laptop...The specs are better in every way. Besides, I couldn't even lay FEAR on the lowest settings on my desktop, and it works great on my laptop, so I know thats not the issue either. HL2 is an older game, so I figured it would be fine.

Anyway, I'm going to see if I can figure out how to upgrade my sound card drivers.

Thanks! Alright, so here's the deal so far. I disabled my sound card and did the nosound thing. I kept getting an error message every time I tried to launch HL2, so I re-enabled my sound card, and left nosound engaged. I could no start HL2, without sound. Game ran great. Played for about 15-20 minutes without sound and without problems. Now, my sound card was enabled, but HL2's sound was disabled. What does this mean, and how to I fix it so I can play HL2 with sound?jjyank

Typo: I COULD start HL2 after re-enabling the sound card. I think I meant to say "now", not "no". Sorry for the confusion.

Everything passed the diagnostic test thing, but I'll try the sound card test and let you know. Thanks for the help so far.

not at all. It stays pretty cool, and I don't even hear the fan go into overdrive. My laptop appears to run the same as any other game i play on it (ones that don't freeze), except the action stops and I can't do anything...

Hello everyone. I've owned Half Life 2 for a long time now, great game. I originally played in on this crappy desk top we have at my house, and uninstalled it some time ago. With about medium settings, I was able to play HL2 just fine. Recently, I've been getting an urge to play through it again. I have since gotten a laptop (which better specs than the old desk top in just about every area) and installed HL2 a few days ago. I can't into the game more than 5 minutes or so without it freezing on me. What gives? My latop is better than the desk top, so I don't get why its freezing. My video drivers have been recently updated. Any suggestions?
