I got my PS3 today, and no matter what I put in for my online ID, it says it's not allowed. This is ridiculous, I know there are loads out there, but I've put in random jumbles of letters and numbers and it still says it. I rang them up and they said keep trying, there are lots of combinations out there. I'm still wondering if it's a system error. Anyone else got this?

I don't want to tar all the moderators with the same brush, I just think they can be overzealous and actually make the site a less pleasant place to be, the opposite to what is intended. It's not entirely their own fault, the ToS are so vague and all encompassing that even inocuous posts can often be seen to be violating something to the uncharitable mind. Go to the ask the mods forum and read a few of the stories there, you won't find many apologies. Usually it's "well we may have been wrong on this, but you've still violated this other thing", it's like getting pulled over by the cops for one thing, but then they still search your car to see if they can at least get you on something.

Amazingly I tried it again this morning, tried holding down some keys and the screen sprung into life! Unfortunately it looks like there is no HDD in the machine, so there is nothing to install the OS on to. From what I've read, installing an HDD is a nightmare so it looks like I've hit a wall again. Is it possible to plug in an external HDD, or even a memory strick, and install the OS onto that?

This is probably a lost cause, but here goes. My brother works in removals and a business was chucking out a load of stuff, including laptops, and he came across an iBook that at first glance had all the various bits with it, ie battery. He couldn't get it to work, ie he tried switching it on and nothing happened, and he gave it to me. I've gone to an electrics place and bought one of those universal laptop power adaptors with different connectors, and one of them fit the iBook in the store. Great!

Got it home and plugged it in, switched it on and it seemed to come to life, it made a bing noise, stuff was clearly happening inside, but nothing was happening on the screen. The caps lock button and num lock buttons were lighting up fine, however I'm told that the Apple symbol on the back of the screen should light up, and I was thinking that the power button you press to switch it on should light up, but neither did. Anyway, I've tried charging it up, switching it on and off etc, I eventually got the disk drive open and there is a Mac OSX disk inside.

Anyway, there's nothing doing at the moment, what should I do? Just throw it away? Is it just a broken screen and are they repairable? To be honest there was probably a reason they were throwing them, and that's because they were totally bust, but I don't mind spending a bit to get it fixed if it's fixeable. Presumably it's nothing to do with not having an official Apple power plug, because it seems to be working in many ways.

I thought about using the TV out function, but I don't know if that would work straight on booting, plus that involves making another purchase that may not really help. Anyway, I'll probably throw it but if anybody has any tips on this that would be cool, thanks.

I've been wondering that too, it's been ages since any quality demos came out in my view. I think Bioshock was the last AAA demo that I got excited about, I don't think any of the decent games that have come out since then have had demos, Rainbow Six, Cod4, Bully, Assassin's Creed etc.

I just got a new set of surround sound speakers this morning, Logitech z5400. I have literally taken the speakers out of the box and placed them in the room where I want them, three underneath and to the sides of the TV, which was on at the time. Without having even plugged the speakers in, strangely the colours around the bottom corners of my TV have gone a weird reddish hue that I can't make go away. I'm concerned this might be a magnetic thing, but surely speakers are suppose to be close to the TV, and I haven't even plugged these in yet! Anyone got any ideas?

I'm trying to hook up my PC to a surround sound system, and it seems that the little port around the back of my machine with SPDIF written on it seems to be the way to do it. If I was in the market for a home cinema receiver to plug this into for Digital 5.1 sound or whatever, what kind of input am I looking for? Is SPDIF basically digital optical sound, am I looking for a receiver with 'digital optical' inputs on it? Sorry I know nothing about this stuff! Thanks for any help.

really? I thought it would be the same. anybody else had this? I've seen a wire with DVI on one end and HDMI on the other, so maybe that would be better. If the cable can carry a DVI signal OK I don't know why it would look bad on an HDTV arguably inferior resolution.

ok, I'll be watching through a TV with HDMI connection, so hopefully that would be OK. You would think HDMI was 'content protected' enough really. i just need to see if my 8800GTX supports it now

the question is in the title really, since Blu Ray seems to have won the war, I want in, but for as cheap as possible. I've seen internal Blu Ray drives are pretty cheap, so can i pop one of those in my PC, which is pretty high spec, and just plug in a DVI to HDMI cable in the back and play stuff top quality through my TV? What is HDCP? Will some weird copyright thing get in the way? thanks for any replies.
