How do you know that, before you even tried using them? I feel pretty lucid myself. To be honest, I went to another psychiatrist before the one I'm taking meds from right now, that didn't help me. My condition actually worsened then; I don't blame the psychiatrist though. Just didn't get the right treatment, probably.
But if I would have listened to some of my parents' friends not to take medicine or go visit a doctor that practices alternative medicine, I'd say I would have been much worse for wear.
You're probably ok and you probably don't need meds. Just don't take your friends or kids or whatever to a priest when they suffer from a severe mental illness, like some dumba** parent I've heard about did because she preferred a more 'natural treatment'... homeopathy didn't seem to do her kid any good, but she kept at it anyway.

Because I know my body, and I know how I'm likely to react. If I'm given a drug that evens out my moods so that I'm constantly in a "meh" state, I will lose the grasp I have on why I shouldn't kill myself, and just decide to do it because I won't have the emotional stopper that I need to prevent it. I don't blame psychiatrists either, but you said exactly what I mean. You didn't get the right treatment, and it left you worse off. I know already the right treatment for me is not drugs, so I won't take them. I'm not one for "alternative medicine" either, for depression and anxiety issues at least. Basically, my self treatment includes putting myself "out there" a little when I feel anxiety, or dipping my toes into an unfamiliar or hard situation. With depression it's a little harder because I have severe highs and lows (I don't want to say I've got bipolar disorder because I don't feel that I do), but I still try to do whatever I can to calm the feelings. I just don't believe I can find happiness or confidence from a pill is all. You have to build that up in yourself, you can't fake it.There's no better treatment for anxiety than "putting yourself out there".
