Yes you can. Subjectively.
That's sort of how it is yeah. I think every unbiased person on SW agrees that SMG2 is the best platformer made this year. By unbiased I mean that the character has to have no impact on your decision.
Even if you're tired of Mario, or if you specifically like the SM64 approach, looking at SMG2 for what it is, it's a great game. Very few unbiased people will score it less than a 8.0.
This is not objective fact but it's evidence that points into a certain direction. Just like Pachter or VGchartz, it's a method used because it's helpfull in predicting results.
The perspective of the review should always cater to the products target audience and not reflect the reviewer's personal opinion, but as games are complext it's undeniable that there is a subjective part aswell.
Reviewers consider Trial and Error gameplay to be 'bad' and the opposite 'good'. It's an unwritten rule aka norm. The Demon Souls review clearly states this, but it has taken the perspective of "T and E is good" which is appropriate reasoning.
"The game has the established CoD FPS gameplay, which still works well" vs "I would have loved if I could run around and explore in SMG2 like I do in SM64 because it's so funz!!!! Omg they should have made moar underwater levels because I love those!!!!"
There is a huge difference in those statements. One is being objective and the other completely subjective. The first will help me in understanding how the game works and if I will like it, the second is useless, just like 90% of GS user reviews.
