Intelligence is just as subjective as morals are. Maybe you should apply your intelligence.

Well, not for persons with firm attitudes...

Intelligence and good are completely different.

Good is a philosophical question as it is based on morals and morals are different from person to person.

Apply your intelligence before you respond.

edinsftw

I think that I understand what you are pointing out. 90% of people have money as only moral and intelligence in front of them.

But I shall be happy to reach those 10%.

Why intelligence doesnt matter: Its not applied 90% of the time.

edinsftw

Well, we could also say:

Why good doesn't matter: it's not applied 90% of the time.

And we can't agree with that. Without good there is no happiness. And we want to be happy.

IQ test doesn't do anything other than estimate a persons intellectual potential assuming they use their intellect to it's full potential. In theory they should learn more and learn faster, but it's a loosetheory. The world is full of brilliant but lazy people. These people are full of potential but they don't care. I.Q doesn't determine a person's forte anyway.

MagnumPI

We are close to the truth here. IQ should be a good measure, but after careful dealing with other factors such as laziness.

then how do you explain the disparity between the wealthy people and the non wealthy people? obviously wealthy people have to be intelligent enough to know how to manipulate the rest of the population in order to sustain their wealth. smart people can't be poor.

Simply, average IQ is 100. Maybe the average IQ of wealthy people is 110-120. But there are people with IQ 160-170. And they are not all wealthy.

Simply because they are not manipulators.

[QUOTE="kremenko2"]

intelligent people get to forage for scraps.

xaos

I find the same thing; well actually for people who think that they are smart, despite the empirical evidence to the contrary provided by their lack of success

Well, success is connected with whole personality and with working environment.

Intelligence is sometimes simply not enough, and I believe we are not even aware in which extent this is true.

The IQ is a measurement of a kind of mentality that benefits the western culture and its derivatives. Scientists like Jared Diamond have said that they consider some people in some hunter-gatherer societies he has spent many time with to be more intelligent than the average western city-dweller even though they would probably score lousy in an IQ test. So I don't think it really measures intelligence but rather how well you are adapted and how productive can you be for a western-style culture and some of the types of thought processes which that task requires.kuraimen

Spatial and numerical tests are mainly culture-free, good verbal tests could also be pretty culture-free.

Some basic knowledge is indeed needed.

For someone outside civilization, I don't know, but new suitable test could be appropriate.

I remember reading somewhere that you are likely your smartest during late adolesence to early twenties. By that I mean your potential is the highest. Obviously you gain more knowledge as you go through life, but in terms of the power of your brain/reasoning, it is highest during that time.

sonicare

I believe that, but if you are using your mind you can be very clever in the old days too.

With no big difference compared to the youth, in my opinion.

I'm 35. Maybe I can't do things which I could in twenties, but also I now can things which I couldn't then.

I'm under the impression that smart people get whatever they want in life and that people who aren't smart get to forage for scraps.

UniverseIX

Interesting! I found that people who aren't smart get whatever they want, and that intelligent people get to forage for scraps.

I'm also foraging for scraps, but I do not doubt in my intelligence. I would like to find more self-respecting people.

If we are not successful, we are not stupid. This is one of the purpose of this topic too.
