In the classic zombie movies the word zombie is used to describe a human corpse that has through whatever plot device been resurrected and so is the living undead.
In the Last Of Us the victims do not die, and are instead taken over by the cordycepes virus and it is this viral infection that changes the humans facial features while they are still aliveOmenUK
It's a fungus not a virus, one of the reasons why I couldn't take Gamespots review seriously was that they missed this plot device. A virus and a fungus are fundamentally different and do different things to survive. Hell we're not even sure if a virus is a living organism but a fungus most definitely is. If this was a virus the plot would have to be altered very severely, most likely resulting in a very much meh ending, if you completed it you'd know what I mean. A virus cannot be transmitted through airbourne spores and also enemies like the clickers would make no sense.
