Okay, guys. As I stated in my first post, I had already decided between them but needed to strengthen my decision. I had chosen to build my own PC. Now all of you have suggested the same, so I guess that's the way to go.

Now the thing is that I don't really know what kind of desktop to buy. All I know is that I have a $1000 to spend and that I want a complete desktop setup (again, including mouse, keyboard and monitor, maybe headset too).

I've spent some time on pcpartpicker and made my own list, but I couldn't fit the budget and have a monitor at the same time. That's why I'm asking you guys to suggest me components to put into my build. You can use pcpartpicker.com but I prefer an amazon.com list because that's where I'll be buying my components.

@sSubZerOo I already have my good old laptop for that. The new PC I'm getting doesn't need to be portable.

And people, instead of arguing with each other, please support your claims by providing links. This topic is about me deciding between a laptop and a desktop. So please post links to pcpartpicker or amazon list with a complete desktop (including mouse, keyboard and monitor), or a laptop.

I won't be moving it around much, so I'm going with a mid tower and an ATX board.

Hey, guys.

Although I've made my decision, but still I would like to whether a $1000 I spend would be worth more if I buy a laptop or a desktop. So this topic is for discussing laptops and desktops having a price tag of $1000 or lower and helping me decide which one is better.

You can post pcpartpicker links for desktop builds but it'd be easier for me if you post links to amazon lists because that way I won't have to deal with so many retailers or keep up with so many shipping processes. Do bear in mind that the part list must be complete and includes at least a keyboard, mouse and a monitor, as these are already built into a laptop.

For those of you who think that a $1000 laptop is better than a desktop for the same price, then please post the amazon link to the particular laptop.

I wouldn't mind if the price of the desktop (including monitor, mouse, keyboard) shoots a little above the $1000 price tag, but it's a concern with the laptop.

The mobility of a laptop doesn't influence my decision because I already have my iPad for taking around. So mobility isn't a problem for me.

Sorry for being off topic, but can someone PM me about choosing between a 970, 290, and 290X?

@Kh1ndjal Those are some great tips. I was thinking the same thing. Remove the GPU and the CPU Cooler, and I should be fine.

@ribstaylor1 I already have a desktop for that purpose. I would be moving the PC like once or twice. I'm not a frequent traveler.

Anyone else got any tips?

When exactly is the AMD 3xx series coming?

I'm going to buy a 970 but it's good to know when the prices are coming down. :p

Is travelling with a PC safe? What if I want to move to another country in a plane or in a bumpy ride?

Will the PC be damaged or will it be fine? The heavy components such as the graphics card (GTX 970) or the CPU cooler (Hyper 212 EVO) must pose a threat. Couldn't they just break off during bumpy rides?

What if I have the PC in a suitcase and the people who handle it at the airport, or maybe I should say "don't handle it", could the PC be damaged?

Maybe you'll think I'm being paranoid, but last month I accidentally dropped my old PC off the table from a height of not more than a metre. I picked up the PC and it definitely was making a rattling noise. I opened up the case and saw that the CPU cooler had come off. I put it back into it's place (without thermal paste) and now it won't get past the blank BIOS screen.

I'm building a new PC and I don't want it to suffer the same fate. So what ways do you suggest I adopt to prevent damage to my PC when I'm moving it?

When I search for processors, I never notice how many cores they have.

How many cores does the 4690 have?

OpenOffice is pretty good. I used it for 2 years. Just be sure to save the documents in the MS Office formats, or else they may not be exactly compatible with MS Office at your school's PCs or anywhere else.
