You can backup your save game profiles, but not all. For example, i save my GTA4 games (settings and games) and Tiger Woods 09 profile to a USB stick. However, I can't save my NFS Carbon profile because the game's copy protection. I'm sure this is true for other games, but it's the only one I have not been able to copy as of late. 2 ways to back things up. One of which backs up your entire PS3 config & data. Done through "System Settings". This can take a while but I recommend everyone do this at least once a month or every two weeks. I use the Media Xporter external HDD (and have all my themes, movies, music, etc...on that - beautiful) The other option is to simply save your profile(s) to a USB thumb drive or external HDD (FAT32). Go to Game, Saved Data Utility, browse to the game profile you want to copy, press triangle and copy it to the attached USB drive. Basically the samething for when you go to the "other" PS3. Go to the same place and browse to the USB and copy it. It will place it appropriately. Just don't piss off a buddy by replacing his profile settings. *Hint: That's why a full system backup can help. My ex-wife nuked my PS3 profile so when I got it back you can understand that I was a bit pissed until I remembered that I had a recent backup. Awesome!!!! I hope this helps somewhat.

I wouldn't do this, but I have heard of a few peeps that need to do this in an attempt to modify their systems to play illegal games on it. The new firmware detects the mods and disables the system (except for the BluRay player). I'm only stating this because this may be a reason why some may wish to explore the firmware rollback. It would be different if we were talking only about software, but modifying firmware is just that - Firm! My thoughts. Peace.

Your HDD is probably not formatted to FAT32. It MUST be FAT32 in order for the PS3 to be able to read it.

What do you mean by DLC? Sorry, but I just need to clarify that because if it's a specific game, then "No" might be the answer; however, I save my profile, Tiger Woods 2009, for example, bring it to my friend's place and load it so we can play with our own profiles. In some cases you can do this, but NFS Carbon is another example of copyright where you can't even backup that data.

Ah, sorry. I must have replied at the same time you guys figured it out. Good job and it's good to know about the media server. BTW, it's usually good to keep that off anyway unless you actually use the MS. Why run services for nothing? Peace and cheers!

First of all, you need to consider the filesystem on the usb drive. It has to be Fat32. Nothing else will work (i.e. NTFS or FAT). Next, you need to consider the size of the drive you are backing up to. Please answer these: What is the size of your USB drive? What is the size of your PS3 HDD? What file system is your usb drive formatted to (i.e. FAT32)? We'll go from there once you answer these. We'll figure this out.
