I'm afraid the real people at fault here are the backers. Kickstarter has gotten way bigger and more unwieldy than it was ever intended to be. The whole idea of Kickstarter is that like-minded people can throw a few £s together to help get a game (or project) off the ground. It is not meant to fund a project from start to finish. The clue is in the title.
How much research did the backers do? Clearly not a lot. If you're going to throw the equivalent of RRP at a game BEFORE IT'S EVEN MADE then I would say you need your head examined. But bare minimum you need to be doing your research on the financials, the development team and schedule and the creative vision for the game.
When people just see "Yogscast" and some pretty pictures and start throwing money at it, it's not surprising that the gaming industry treats gamers like suckers.
This is an excellent review to read. Any time I read about the DS series it seems the games are overwhelmingly loved and any voice of dissent is shouted down as "OMG N00B! GO BACK TO CoD!!!". It's nice to see a well thought out alternative to the gushing praise.
As an big RPG fan (although I can't stand JRPGs) I've been agonising as to whether to jump into the series and this review has raised literally every concern I had; steep learning curve on the mechanics, minimal plot and slow character progression.
I think I'll eventually pick up DS1 if I see it cheap somewhere. As with all games, you should only ever Trust your own judgement but it's nice to see someone stick their neck out with a controversial opinion every now and again!
This is exactly what I expected from the game. It’s an expansion pack for Arkham City packaged as a whole new game. I’ll pick it up when it’s at the price I’d pay for an expansion.
