This game's story is well told. The work within the scenes is fantastic--acting, dialogue, movement, environment. It does a okay job of using a nonlinear narrative to create meaningful juxtaposition, though some events are badly ordered and it could have been used to greater effect. Characters and relationships are, for the most part, well crafted and you'll like at least a few of them. And the story's movement is mostly interesting.
But this story is very long, and when you have something like that all the flaws become more apparent. Unfortunately, there are flaws at a fundamental level will remove the suspension of disbelief from a ton of people. The characters don't ever make their own choices (you can tell the plot is forced an planned). Because there are no consequences you'll risk losing any attachment to any given moment. Some of these situations are very contrived. While interesting, you aren't going to ask yourself why and think (ie intrigue) very often. And lastly, each act's arch ends before the pound (that meaningful moment where you and the characters discover something about themselves of life).
This is a very good attempt at telling a story through this medium, I really appreciate that this kind of story was trying to be told. Like I said, it is well told, hell a bunch of people will appreciate this just on those well told bits, but as a whole it wasn't told well enough.
@KingMob93 Did you just imply that ARR has good combat and that the hyper restrictive class system is good? That's absolutely crazy. In fact, the way they did the class system coupled with the limited stat distribution (including armor) with the way damage is calculated makes EVERY person within a given class 99% the same.
Generously worded review that ignores all the problems with the game (ie that it's nothing new and very restrictive). And because of that most people are going to see this and wonder why it only got a 7.
@alecrast82 . . . did I just read this? ARR is the amazing game with lots to do that is different from Wow and improves all mmo's out there and GW2 isn't. Wow.
@dalger21 If a game gets a 7, yet people love it to hell (the game even spawns one of the biggest gaming franchises ever) wouldn't one think it doesn't deserve a 7?
Oh wow, did I just hear what I thought I heard? I have a level in Little Big Planet based on "The Chimney Sweeper" by William Blake. So, this is right up my alley.
Who in their right mind gives an already proven game's HD remake a 7.0, not on the basis of the technical bump up but on the actual quality of the game. That's about the closest we're going to get to actually missing the broad side of a barn in 'game journalism.'
