I just joined xbox live is it true that you will have to profiles one for live and the other not??

Hi, I need help setting up xbox live 1 month free trial:

Where do i plug my ethernet cable??? becasue i plugged it into my PC and its not doing anything

and how do i connect becuase it won't connect

Sorry but i'm new with the Xbox
