Hi my friends,
This week, I was watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy. No, not the theatrical versions, but the extended cuts. Even though the films are extended cut, the films are still rated PG-13 (US) for the content descriptors given before. Here are the reviews of them and things different from the theatrical versions.
The fellowship of the ring- The first chapter of the LOTR saga after the Hobbit. It tells the story on how Isildur (Aragorn's great-great grandfather) got the ring and how he was a complete *** to Elrond (Hugo Weaving) when he got the ring. Later on lead to short stories of the ring crossing paths with Gollum/Smeagol (Andy Serkis) and Bilbo Baggins (a Hobbit flashback). Decades later, Bilbo Baggins has a nephew to watch under the name of Frodo (Elijah Wood from Deep Impact, Happy Feet, and a new voiceover to the Spyro games). Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen from X-Men) returns to the shire. Bilbo leaves the Shire. Frodo gets the ring and leaves on a journey to Mordor with his gardener and best friend Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin from the Goonies and 50 first dates) and his two dumb friends Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin/Perregrin Took (Billy Boyd). Later on meeting Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen form G.I. Jane), Legolas (Orlando Bloom from Pirates of the Carribean), and Gimli (John-Rhys Davies form Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark and Last Crusade).
Differences: Just extended scenes pretty much with more behind the scenes with Peter Jackson and his team. Also commentaries from the cast.
The Two Towers- After Boromir (Sean Bean from James Bond 007: Goldeneye and a voiceover from Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion) loses his life to try and protect Merry and Pippin in the last battle of the first film and having Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli finding the bumbling hobbits, Frodo and Sam leave on their own to Mordor and run into Gollum/Smeagol on the way. And it's also not so pleasent that Frodo and Sam get captured by Faramir (David Wenham), brother of Boromir. On Aragorn's side, he and his friends find Gandalf the White (Gandalf transformed after his fight with the Balrog in the first film and everyone else thought he was dead after that fall). Merry and Pippin escape to a forest with an ent, a living tree named Treebeard (voiced over by John Rhys-Davies).
Differences: A flashback where Boromir and Faramir reunite, but break up again due to their jerk father. More behind the scenes and commentaries.
The Return of the King- The final chapter in the LOTR saga. Smeagol gets Frodo and Sam closer to Mordor, but also fall into a trap with a giant spider named Shelob. On Aragorn's side, they find Merry and Pippin smoking tobacco and drinking near Saruman's (Christopher Lee) tower. Faramir gets sick and nearly gets burned alive with his father. Pippin serves as Faramir's father's slave. And Frodo and Sam finish off the evil by destroying the ring in Mt. Doom.
Differences: A scene where Legolas and Gimli have a drinking contest, Gimli gets drunk and Legolas wins. Also a scene where Saruman dies (that scene screenshot caused pretty big controversy all over New Zealand until the fim was shown). And pretty much the added stuff as mentioned before.
You'll probably ask if I cried on any scenes in the films. That answer is yes. I cried when Frodo left to the undying lands with Bilbo, Gandalf, Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), and Elrond. But in the book Sam, Legolas, and Gimli join him later. And my mom cried when Boromir died in the first film (she has a huge crush on Sean Bean).
Great trilogy, go for the extended versions. They follow the book more.
