"Halo games have always had legs"

Uhh, no... SONY games have legs. TLOU sold 1.3 million on day 1 and sold 7 million before the remastered version came out. It's probably at 10m now.

Halo and Gears sell the most in the first week and then fall off a cliff. A Best Buy worker at NeoGAF said Halo 5 sales became nonexistent after BO3 came out.

@FastRobby: They will get slaughtered in November against the SW: BF bundle. Winning by 18k vs your biggest game is not impressive at all. The sad thing is I actually wanted the XB brand to be more competitive. It would force Sony to do things like backwards compatibility and XB has done some positive things. But I expected a win with Halo. But by 18k? That's not good.

Actually, I hope MS gets desperate enough to remove Xbox LIVE fees. They started the BS pay2play online scheme; it's only fitting that they're the ones who end it. I think it's best for the consumer if Xbox fails.

Wow... A company that has been making OSes for the past 20+ years is good at making optimized OSes... Who would have thought?

Too bad the Xbone OS is crappy. I'm a big fan of Windows 10 desktop and phones. Can't wait for the SnapDragon 820 Windows 10 phones.

@FastRobby: No. They were opposed to draconian DRM policies, not digital distribution. Even looking at Amazon for last month, PS4 was consistently ahead of the Xbone. There were several weeks where multiple PS4 SKUs were ahead of the best-selling Xbone SKU.

PS fans are just more open to ordering online than Xbox fans.

@cohmiracleman: As I've said, you either believe them or you don't.

Why are people comparing halo 3 day one physical sales which had no digital sales vs halo 5 day sales minus digital sales?

People are literally claiming a 70% decline in sales since halo 3 but completely ignoring digital sales.

Digital sales account for 30% add 30% to 935k and you get 1.2 million units Halo 3 sold 2.4 million units in 24 hours not 4 days by the way,in 4 days it most have being closer to 3 million and the 360 user base was smaller.

So yeah Halo 3 numbers crush Halo 5 ones even doubling NPD numbers Halo 5 would still fell short of Halo 3.

First of all. Stop saying 30%, because you don't know how much digital sales there were. Secondly your math is COMPLETELY wrong. Seriously go back to school. If NPD figures are 935k, and they account for 70% of the sales, than you've got +1.3million in total sales. You are doing 935+0.3*935, which is taking 30% of 70%...

30% is very generous and unrealistic.

We know PS fans are more open to digital distribution, and even their numbers aren't that high.

It only reaches that high if the hard copies of the games are sold out everywhere, convincing hardcore fans to download. Seems like Halo 5 is plenty in-stock at retailers.

I'd say it's more like 5-10% for the Xbone.

@cohmiracleman: Every NPD thread is full of speculation and leaks.

The sales numbers that come out for both hardware and software are from leakers. You either choose to believe them or not.

You sure about that? I think their PR is actually genius. It confused so many lemmings.

@roboed: How would MS even know how many they sold to consumers? Microsoft only sells the physical copies to retailers. Regardless of the possibility that most units are lying around in retailer stores or warehouses for years, MS has still "sold" those units to someone and made a profit off of it. In most cases, retailers never give out sell-through sales data, even to their manufacturers. That's why both SONY and MS use NPD to track sell-through #s.

MS won't know the sell-through rate until NPD results come in.

It's clear MS is comparing their amount of units shipped in their revenue figures as well as their attach rates.

@cohmiracleman: I'm just guessing. Buying 5 million copies and only selling 1 million would be a disaster.

@NathanDrakeSwag: I'm smart enough to know that you'd need some way to objectively measure what is "abysmal", rather than just throwing around the word because you want to bag an a good game. It's quite sad.

If you could enlighten us all on your objective measuring scale, it would be much appreciated.

You seemed to have missed the part where he said "for a halo game".

He was speaking in relative terms, not absolute terms.
