Gears spins 3 million
by o_mighty_one on Comments
The good news keeps pouring in for Microsoft's holiday hit, Gears of War. The gritty shooter has surpassed another milestone, topping 3 million units sold worldwide since its release in early November. Though it was released in late 2006, Gears of War was the third-best selling game of last year, behind Madden NFL 07 for the PlayStation 2 (released in August) and New Super Mario Bros. for the DS (released in May). Gamers are also gobbling up Gears-of-War-related downloads at an impressive pace. The game's first content pack, which features two bonus multiplayer maps, has garnered more than 750,000 downloads since its release on January 10. Even with all those downloads, Epic and Microsoft won't see a dime from the pack's release--the content is free. In total, Gears of War content--including themes, strategy guides, trailers, and the aforementioned maps--has been downloaded 1.5 million times. Gears of War is rated M for Mature and won GameSpot's Game of the Year award for 2006.
Capcom's Lost Planet: Extreme Condition and Dead Rising Ship More Than Two Milli
by o_mighty_one on Comments
SUNNYVALE, Calif - Jan. 17, 2007 — Capcom today announced that both Lost Planet: Extreme Condition and Dead Rising for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft have each shipped more than one million units worldwide. These numbers make Capcom the most successful Japanese software publisher producing games for the Xbox 360. Lost Planet has shipped one million units worldwide following its December 21 release in Japan and subsequent January 12 release in North America and Europe, while Dead Rising has done the same since its release on August 8, 2006. Dead Rising, rated M for Mature by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB), and Lost Planet, rated T for Teen, can be found on retail shelves around the world.and#12288; "The fact that we've reached the important one million milestone with our first two 360 titles makes our success that much more phenomenal," said Mark Beaumont, executive vice president, officer, Capcom Entertainment and Capcom Europe. "It speaks volumes for the quality of games Capcom produces, as well as the potential for Japanese publishers and new intellectual properties on the system." Dead Rising is an action horror game that follows the harrowing tale of Frank West, an overly zealous freelance photojournalist in pursuit of the story of a lifetime in a small suburban town which has been completely overrun by zombies. He seeks refuge in the local shopping mall, but soon learns it is far from the safe haven he had thought. Dead Rising takes place over 72 hours, during which Frank must unravel the mystery behind the catastrophe and survive the dangerous swarm of enemies that lie in wait. The unprecedented level of freedom provides players with a vast array of gameplay possibilities to do anything and everything they've wanted to do in a mall. Hundreds of unique objects can be used as weapons to fend off the hordes of zombies - everything from golf clubs and baseball bats to cash registers and stuffed animals. With the population of the town of Willamette being more than 50,000 people, this means that potentially over 50 billion zombies have been unleashed on Xbox 360 systems around the globe. Combining a gripping single player campaign and intense multiplayer modes with support for up to 16 players via Xbox Live online game service, Lost Planet is an epic gaming masterpiece. Taking full advantage of the Xbox 360 system's unprecedented power, Lost Planet contains an unrivalled level of detail as advanced light sourcing is used to ensure a realistic presentation that enhances every explosion, smoke and particle effect. Enormous world maps unfold as players battle hostile creatures in blistering weather conditions across vast snow fields and deserted cities either on foot or in armed, robotic Vital Suits. Time says PS3 was a bust
by o_mighty_one on Comments
PlayStation 3 one of five things magazine says "went from buzz to bust"; calls console "hideously expensive," launch titles "lame." When the New York Times said the PlayStation 3 "just isn't that great" in November, many Sony fans were up in arms. However, those words were relatively kind compared to what Time had to say. In naming its "5 Things That Went From Buzz to Bust" for 2006, the magazine put the PS3 right up there with Snakes on a Plane, O.J. Simpson's If I Did It book proposal, and Bode Miller's goose egg at the Winter Olympics. The piece begins harshly ("The big story in computer games this year was HOW TO BLOW A HUGE LEAD, by Sony." (capitals in original)), continues brutally ("The PS3 is hideously expensive," "the launch titles were lame"), and ends with a schoolyard insult ("You know you're in trouble when you get beat by something called a Wii"). Time's disdain for the PS3 isn't unprecedented. For the console's launch, the magazine also ran an article titled "Sony's PlayStation 3 Is Not Worth the Hype."

Brutes playable in Halo 3?
by o_mighty_one on Comments
Source: The blogs of two Belgian Xbox Ambassadors, PlatoniX (English translation) and YLA G. The official story: Microsoft rep: "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation." [UPDATE] Bungie has debunked the rumor in the studios' Weekly Update. There is, however, a documentary coming "sometime next week" that will reveal some elements of the single-player campaign. What we heard: One of the big surprises in 2004's blockbuster Halo 2 was the ability to play as a member of an alien race. Gamers suited up as the Arbiter--one of the Covenant's Elites bestowed with a special title--in the single-player campaign and could skin themselves as Elites in the multiplayer portion. Now word is spreading that another alien race will be playable in the upcoming Halo 3, due for release sometime next year. The race in question is the Brutes (the character on the right in the image), the gorilla-like berserkers who became the bodyguards of the Prophets. According to a post on a few blogs out of Europe, a new Halo 3 video will be headed to Xbox Live Marketplace on December 20 showing Brutes as playable characters. The alleged seven-minute video will also feature two and a half minutes of gameplay, which would make it the first time the public has gotten a look at the game in action. These blogs belong to members of Belgium's Xbox Elite Team, a group of Xbox 360 gamers who are regional ambassadors for the system. Xbox Ambassadors are sanctioned by Microsoft but aren't actually employed by the company. Typically, Ambassadors are active community members willing to go the extra mile to help out others. Both PlatoniX and YLA G, the owners of the two blogs, are listed as Xbox Ambassadors on Xbox.com, but this doesn't mean they are directly tied to Microsoft or have any insider information. The two also don't cite their source for the Halo 3 details. There are no doubt going to be some surprises in Halo 3, but Bungie managed to keep the ability to play as the Arbiter secret until the game came out. Why would it choose to spill the beans early this time around? Bogus or not bogus?: Based on the fact that no source is named, we have to say bogus for now, but we won't really find out until next week.
