Just further insight here. For a chicken to hatch from an egg it would have to be laid by a chicken and fertilized by a cock (Cock-a-Doolde-Do). If you think the egg came first you are barmy.

don't know what to tell you. maybe it was dram directly attached to the board and not in a dimm form factor, i don't know when simms or dimms started to really take off. but it was 640k :P
something like this perhaps? no expansion slots for memory, just soldered on discrete devices and a bunch of isa slots.
I'm not sure how that would work. The builds were primitive. You can't just solder a chip and expect the thing to know it was there.
