you know, the guy who decides what his game is going to be about and stuff. i hope its not too hard a job. does anyone know what being a game designer consists of specifically? ive given it alot of thought, and making my ideas into video games seems like the best direction i could possibly go in life.Skeledragon
Let's clear a few things up right off the bat. Getting into the gaming industry is a hard enough task as it is, and to top that off it's a hard field to study in college. I currently go to college for Web design and I have to say I thought I would be able to get away with just designing; not the case whatsoever. Programming is a part of my every day experience in this major. You may want to get the idea out of your head that you are only going to do one thing.
In this field if you are going to be marketable you are going to need to be well versed in more than just "I know what to make the game about." In fact you won't ever get to make that decision unless you either become the best of the best or start your own company. And starting your own company in this field would be EXTEMELY hard as you would need to know the ins and outs of everything that has to do with anything in this field.
So is it easy? Hell no! Can you do it? Well, how bad do you want it? I can tell you right now if you are going to make it through college in a game design track you better start learning how to program. And if you think you can skip college as you don't need it then I doubt you will make it in the work force as you would be surprised what it actually takes to make a video game. I thought the Web design track wouldn't be too bad but it does take a lot of work. And I have had professors who have straight up said game design is probably tougher.
