Car made of vegetables hits 240km/h

The tyres are made of potatoes and the brake pads from ground cashew shells.

The body was created from hemp and rapeseed oil, and it runs on fuel made from fermented wheat and sugar beet.

Yet despite the greenest of credentials, this mean machine is capable of an impressive 240km/h.

The one-seater racing car - called Eco One - has been built by experts from Warwick University to dispel the perception that "green" motoring means dull little electric runarounds or filling your fuel tank with chip fat.

The academics behind the project hope cars made in such a way will one day be a regular sight on Grand Prix circuits and that their ideas will be adopted by the mass automotive industry.

Eco One was designed by Dr Kerry Kirwan, a researcher at Warwick Manufacturing Group, the university's academic department that provides solutions to industry, and built by student Ben Wood, 23, over two months at a cost of $46,500.

Mr Wood said: "All the plastic components can be made from plants and although the chassis has to be made from steel for strength, steel is a very recyclable material.

"If we can build a high-performance car that can virtually be grown from seed, just imagine what's possible for the average family car."

Powered by the engine from a Triumph Daytona motor-cycle, Eco One does 0-100km/h in under four seconds.

Zoe Howard, head of communications for Warwick Manufacturing Group, said: "It demonstrates that not all eco cars have to be small and electric - they can be high-performance too."

The car has sparked interest in the motor sports industry, with several potential collaborators keen on developing the technology.

"The motor sports industry knows it's got to be greener. And the concept is transferable into cars for the race track or the motorway.

"The main message is how cutting edge technology is making high performance eco-friendly cars a reality, helping dispel the myth that green cars are slow and sluggish."

Eco One is 95 per cent biodegradable or recyclable, although its steering-wheel, seat and electrics are made of conventional materials.

It has not been raced competitively because, the designers say, it is in a ****of its own.

Man catches leopard in bedroom with bare hands

A Negev resident woke up early Monday morning to find a leopard in his bedroom.

The wild animal had been chasing Arthur Damush's beloved cat around the house, and when the two animals entered his bedroom, Damush did not hesitate, and knew exactly what he had to do.

The Midreshest Ben-Gurion resident instinctively jumped out of his bed and caught the wild creature with his bare hands.

In the past two weeks residents of the area noticed that cats were slowly disappearing, and occasionally spotted the leopard sneaking between houses. This time, however, the leopard decided to pay the Damush household a visit.

Raviv Shapira, head of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority's southern district, told Ynet, "Around 3 am, a cat ran into the house, with the leopard chasing after him. The two animals lunged into the bedroom.

"The homeowner who was sleeping with his wife woke up and yelled: 'Leopard!', and at first thought he was seeing things. When the leopard used its teeth to grab the cat by its neck, the homeowner pounced on it and caught it with his hands."

Shapira added that this was the first time he had ever encountered a leopard entering a home.

After catching the animal, Damush told his wife to call their neighbor, Yossi Sinai, a Nature and Parks Authority inspector.

"The wife called me and she was very nervous and asked me to come over," Sinai said. "We arrived at the house, and saw Damush holding the leopard with his hands. We took over from that point. The fact that Damush was able to overpower the leopard is outstanding."

The leopard was taken for medical examination in order to determine if it had any diseases and to find out what caused it to get so close to the houses. A transmitter was fixed to the leopard in order to provide information on its whereabouts at all times.

The cat was lightly wounded and Damush, who was slightly scratched, was also taken for testing.

Man Admits to Stealing Shoes Off Womens Feet

A British man has admitted to stealing shoes right off of women's feet in public.

Omar Abd-el-Gowd, 26, who said he'd had a shoe fetish since he was 12, admitted to a total of eight robberies in London between December 2005 and November 2006.

He's being charged with sexual assault by one of his victims, but has denied the allegations.

Gowd told a London jury that he had approached victims from behind, quickly lifted up one of their feet and ran off with one of their shoes. He claimed he barely recalled the details of the women he had attacked, but could completely remember their shoes.
