assassins creed

This year has seen a hilarious amount of games sneak into PS3 Fanboy HQ. Like the great biblical flood, these games purged our minds of everything which came before and we were left floundering in a sea of quality games. Now that we've played them all we can finally sit down and review them - in short, opinion filled posts. Assassin's Creed is, for such a highly anticipated title, rather disappointing. That's not to say that, technically, the game is a masterpiece - it's just not particularly fun. With large, varied cities - all intricately detailed - the graphics and animation are first rate, even though it's clear that all the talented animators were put to work on Altair's in-game motions, leaving the lesser skilled animators to produce the cutscenes. Faces do look ugly and there's some silly clipping that could easily have been avoided. Outside of the cutscenes, however, the animations are excellent and easily make the game's fun bits all the more aesthetically pleasing. These fun bits come in the form of freerunning across ancient cities and, even while the rest of the game has become dull and tiresome, you'll still garner some pleasure from outrunning pursuing guards and diving headfirst into a roof-garden to conceal yourself.

devil may cry4

The discerning Devil May Cry fan can pick up on the minute subtleties hidden within the surprisingly complex and deep battle system the series is known for. It's that kind of discerning ability that's needed to see the improvements of Devil May Cry 4. As the franchise's first outing in the current generation of games, it's fascinating to see how much the series has improved, and how much it has stayed the same. Many of the changes featured in Devil May Cry 4 make it much more accessible than previous iterations in the series. Newcomers will appreciate the toned down difficulty and streamlined level design. But, the return of mainstay flaws, like unnecessary (and confusing) backtracking, and poor platforming will frustrate players -- both hardcore vets and newcomers alike. However, in spite of its few flaws, DMC4 is undeniably a fun game, and quite possibly the best in the series. Some previewers unjustly passed Nero off as a simple Dante clone. Yes, it's not hard to see why gamers would confuse the two. Not only do they look similar, but their movements are seemingly identical. However, playing as Nero offers a brand new system for fans to master and enjoy. The addition of the Devil Bringer completely changes the way players will perform combos. No, it's not a subtle change -- rather, clever use of the arm introduces a whole new mechanic to the franchise, making this the freshest addition to the series so far.

play tv

The PS3 has firmly entrenched itself as not only a games console, but a fully fledged multimedia device. It features blu-ray, media streaming, a web browser and image viewing and printing. Now, with PlayTV, the PS3 adds television to its repertoire. Sony could easily have released a simple TV tuner with only the most essential features, but instead they've developed a product that's incredibly feature rich and integrates itself into the PS3 experience seamlessly. Setting up your surprisingly light PlayTV box is simple and painless and requires nothing more than plugging an aerial in one end and a USB cable, connected to your PS3, into the other. Once this is done you need only load up the accompanying disc software, which will install the PlayTV client onto your XMB and guide you through the simple setup. After this, you'll have a new "TV" section on the XMB. PlayTV takes advantage of Freeview in the UK, a set of free TV channels and radio stations. Load up the client and you're off. The emphasis has clearly been placed on being user friendly. The first time you enter any section of the software a splash screen will show you the controls. These can be reviewed again in the help section, along with more in-depth guides. If you'd rather use a remote control than a SIXAXIS controller, your Blu-ray remote will work just fine and PlayTV even comes with an overlay which can be stuck on top to show which buttons do what.
