Cause I really think so. The one game that set this topic off was Haze. Nevermind that it's not a very good game, but even looking at the character designs make me want to cringe. All of the horrible yellow colors and the uniforms make the game look very silly. The characters look more like bumble bees than anything else.
Gears of War was one of the last games I played that had horrible artwork/character designs too. I didn't understand the whole "gears" theme at all, which was complete with "cogtags". Despite being a fun shooter, the story was totally ridiculous and I never felt like I was doing anything other than going around shooting bad guys. I just didn't get it; these were character and story concepts that any 12-year-old with a penchant for videogame violence could come up with.
But of course, there are some exceptions out there. BioShock is amazing. Mass Effect is good, but it has to be; it's an RPG. And there are others, but I'd have to say for the most part, videogame artwork is just awful and silly. A lot of videogame companies just need to try harder.
