PS3 Impressions

So I got to play the PS3 for the very first time in the EB Games in Helsingborg, and boy was it awesome. I played Motorstorm and tried pretty much everything new about the controller, and of course MotorStorm. Here are my thoughts on the differences.

  • Weight - The controller is really light because of the lack of rumble, and it caught me by surprise. It was light even with all of that extra crap put on to keep people from stealing wireless controllers.
  • R2/L2 Buttons - I think it was just because I was playing the racing games, but my finger was slipping off of the R2 trigger as I was holding it down. The button from the PS2 was changed to a trigger for the PS3. It feels really good, but I hope that playing it a lot will train my fingers to keep themselves on the trigger. The XBOX 360's triggers have a big advantage because they move down and back up to avoid slipping, while the PS3 triggers only move down.
  • PS Button - I didn't get to play around with the PS button, but during loading times I pressed it a few times, and it seems pretty durable and I like the feel of it a lot better than the analog button on the DualShock.
  • Motion Sensing - I wasn't too impressed with the motion sensing. It might have been because I was playing MotorStorm with the bike, which people said has really touchy motion sensing, but I quickly turned it off. I like the fact that I wasn't conscious of a sensor bar to keep in range of, like the Wii, and I also like how responsive it was, but using it to steer the bike just didn't work for me.
  • MotorStorm - Yes, I got to play MotorStorm, but only on one track and with only the bike. I have to say, this game is freaking AWESOME! I ran through the one track twice and went two different ways. One propelled me to victory, and the other sent me back a long way. The only real thing I was disappointed about was the lack of splitscreen. Even with that large factor, I will probably get this game launch day or shortly after.

Even though I was just messing around and joking with my friends and watchers, I was still jittery after the race from the excitement and the thrill of playing the PS3 for the first time. All I can say is, I can't wait for March 23 to come.

GDC Sony Keynote Impressions

So, the Phil Harrison keynote was yesterday, and it was cuh-ray-zay! Sony promised that the keynote would blow our minds and it pretty much did mine. Everything that I wanted to happen, except for a price drop of course, happened, and I couldn't be more excited. Here's some of the things that Phil Harrison announced:
  • Playstation Home - So this is a service which is free to all Playstation 3 owners. It's pretty much a Mii and Second Life Killer, and an XBOX Live... uhh... hurter... It takes the whole virtual you part of Mii and it makes it better, allowing your character to obtain clothing and other accessories from points earned from achievements in games. There will also be game related items that can only be unlocked by doing a certain achievement in a certain game. This is really cool and I can't wait for this to come out. Also, you get your own little room, where you can also buy certain objects to place in the room. This is where people will really see what you've been playing, because there are a lot more game related objects, so if all you play is Resistance, your room will be all Resistance. There is also a lobby where you can talk to friends via voice chat, you can play games in an arcade with a friend, and you can invite them to your room. When in your room, you can share pictures, movies, and music currently stored on your PS3, which is pretty cool. The really cool thing is how this will stay free. There will be ads, but the banner ads will be real banners, and any real advertisements will be game related and will stream in the rooms, but you can walk by it if you want or you can sit there and watch. Finally, there will be a hall of fame, where you can take friends and show them all of your trophies and brag and all that. I'm sure that there will be more content added as the service launches in fall of 2007. There will be a beta in April and I will try to get on that bandwagon to report on how this feels.
  • LittleBigPlanet - This is going to be a free game released by a third party, but exclusively "helped along" by Sony. The reason that this is free is because there are no levels that come with the game. When I heard that, I thought to myself, "Ugh... Microtransactions..." But this isn't the case here. You make your own levels. That's right, you make the levels. You can then invite up to three people into your game to play it out. I expect that there will be a marketplace where you can buy pre-made levels by the company and download user created content. This is one of those thing I would truly call next gen. The title is supposed to hit the Playstation Network in 2008.

There were many other things, but these were the two HUGE things that I wanted to talk about, so this will definitely make my purchase of the PS3 come March 23rd a WHOLE lot sweeter. It just makes me want that day to come all the faster. BIG ham sandwich to Phil Harrison for giving us something a lot better than stupid remarks.

Thrillville and Medal of Honor: Heroes

I finally got along to writing another review and I am sort of satisfied that I got to write a negative review (it makes me feel like I have more power haha) so go check out the review of Thrillville. Finally, I got Medal of Honor: Heroes and I'm now online with it. I beat the campaign mode for MoH:H in like 2 hours (gah its so short) so if I'm gonna tag along with domstercool that means I'm up to 2 games beaten (LEGO Star Wars 2 and MOH:H) But back to the online buisness. I am online with the name "PhersLee" and I'll usually be online around 6.00-9.00PM Stockholm Time (5-8PM GMT) (12-3PM Eastern)

Borat Review

Story: The story in Borat is fairly bland, although the story is not what is special in this movie. What is really special in this movie is the hilarity and the jokes that can actually stand alone perfectly. The story in Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit of Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (yes, all that’s the title) is basically that Borat lives in Kazakhstan and he is sent to “US and A” to learn about what makes America such a successful country. While he’s there, he falls in love with Pamela Anderson and treks across the country to find her. Like I said, while it is kind of bland with no real twists, the plot works, plain and simple.

Acting: Sacha Baren Cohen is without a doubt a genius, and he takes that genius and puts in behind Borat to obtain a sense of outlandishness and awkwardness. This film reminded me of one of those hidden camera shows where the people have no idea what’s going on and you see their expressions raw and real, and Cohen actually made Borat look like a Kazazk instead of a guy pretending to be one.

Sound: Obviously, a comedy wouldn’t be a comedy without those lines that people repeat for months and months to come, and Borat is stocked full of those lines. The fact that he delivers them with a hilarious accent only makes those lines even better. The music in Borat is also hilarious in the fact that it’s Kazazk music and, well, it’s just funny in some sort of way.

Comedy: When it comes to a comedy, Borat is one of the best. It accomplishes EXACTLY what a comedy is supposed to do, and that’s make you laugh without making things too complicated. This made me laugh a TON, and as you can see, the plot was not the least bit complicated.

Story: 7/10
Acting: 9/10
Sound: 10/10
Comedy: 10/10
Parental Rating: 16+
Watch, Wait, or Pass? Watch in theaters
Overall: 9/10

Whose birthday is it again?

I got my sister Loco Roco for her birthday, and, giving her the fact that I wanted to do a review on it, I ended up playing it more that her haha. I just posted my review, so go check it out.

New Fall Out Boy

I just listened to the new Fall Out Boy tracks "This Ain't a Scene It's An Arms Race" and "Carpal Tunnel of Love" and I have to say, the new Fall Out Boy's looking pretty good. TAaSIAAR is really good and I like to think of it as a revelation for Fall Out Boy in the sense that they are starting to leave their punkness behind, but then I hear CToL and I'm brought back to reality, the reality that Fall Out Boy is the same punk band that they were two years ago.

This Ain't a Scene It's an Arms Race - 5/5
Carpal Tunnel of Love - 4/5
